The Silent Guardians of Our Skies Hidden in the Mists of Pidurutalagala 🏔️✈️📡

You surely know the beauty of Pidurutalagala, the highest peak in Sri Lanka. But did you know that atop this peak operates a critical facility that stays awake 24/7 for the safety of our country's airspace?

This is the Pidurutalagala Radar and Communication Center, affiliated with the Electronics and Air Navigation Engineering Division of Airport and Aviation Services (Sri Lanka) Ltd (AASL).

🔹 History & Mission Established in 1992, this center acts as the heartbeat providing essential Communication and Surveillance facilities for every commercial aircraft flying over the vast 1,700,000+ sq km 'Colombo Flight Information Region'.

🔹 Technology & Reach The technical capability here is immense:

Communication: VHF systems covering up to 300 nautical miles.

Surveillance: SSR (Secondary Surveillance Radar) covering 200 nautical miles, supported by two ADS-B units.

Connectivity: Utilizes Sri Lanka's one of the longest Microwave Link to transmit data instantly to the Area Control Center in Ratmalana.

🔹 The Heroes Behind the Screens: ATSEP 👨‍🔧👩‍🔧 While we often hear about pilots and Air Traffic Controllers, the Air Traffic Safety Electronics Personnel (ATSEP) are the ones who keep this complex technical network alive.

Braving the freezing cold, mist, and harsh weather conditions atop Pidurutalagala, two ATSEP officers and support staff are stationed residentially 24/7, 365 days a year. Even when access roads are damaged by cyclones and logistics become a nightmare, they remain committed often away from their families to ensure zero technical downtime. They are the backbone that ensures the "eyes and ears" of our aviation sector remain open.

Although this high security zone is closed to the public, these silent professionals deserve our utmost respect for their national service. 🇱🇰❤️

🫡 Salute to our heroes. Pride of the nation.

Even when visibility drops and the runway disappears into rain or fog, precision never does.

Aircraft rely on the Instrument Landing System (ILS) — a highly accurate ground-based radio guidance system that provides pilots with exact lateral and vertical alignment to the runway. By following these electronic signals, the aircraft remains perfectly centered and on the correct glide path, ensuring a safe and stable approach all the way to touchdown.

It’s a seamless blend of technology, training, and trust — guiding every arrival safely onto the runway in all kinds of weather.

Invisible from the cabin. Essential from the cockpit.

21 Years On… Sri Lanka Still Remembers 🌊🕊️

On 26th December 2004, the ocean that gave us life returned with unimaginable force, taking thousands of lives and changing countless families and communities forever.

Twenty-one years later, the pain remains — but so does the strength born from that day.

We bow our heads in remembrance of the innocent lives lost — fathers, mothers, children, friends, and neighbors. 🕯️
May their souls rest in eternal peace.

To those who lost loved ones, your grief is shared by a nation that remembers your tears, your silence, and your courage. 💔
Your strength in rebuilding life inspires generations.

We honor the survivors — those who endured loss and hardship. 🌱
Your resilience turned tragedy into hope and showed the world true courage.

With deepest gratitude, we remember all who extended their hands during those darkest days — rescuers, healthcare workers, volunteers, security forces, and everyday citizens. 🤝
You lifted a broken nation and proved that unity is our greatest strength.

This remembrance is for all of us — for what we lost, for what we endured, and for the compassion we showed in darkness.

We remember. We honor. We stand together. ❤️

May peace embrace those we lost.
May strength remain with those who survived.
May unity guide our nation forward. 🇱🇰

𝐖𝐫𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐁𝐫𝐨𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐃𝐚𝐲 | 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐌𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐇𝐮𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐋𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐧𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐅𝐥𝐲

Before supersonic jets, before spaceflight, before airports and airshows, there were two brothers, a wooden aircraft, and an idea that refused to stay grounded.

That first flight in 1903 lasted only seconds, but it sparked a revolution that changed how we explore, connect, and see the world.

Aviation is more than machines, it’s curiosity, courage, and the human desire to go higher and farther than ever before.

Today we celebrate the moment the sky became a destination.

✈️ Once you fall in love with flight, the world looks different forever.
