Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution IX: A JDM Legend
The Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution IX, commonly known as the Evo 9, is one of the most celebrated models in the legendary Evolution lineup. Introduced in 2005, it carried forward Mitsubishi’s rally-inspired performance heritage while adding refinements that made it a favorite among driving enthusiasts worldwide.
Powered by the iconic 4G63 2.0L turbocharged inline-four engine, the Evo 9 delivered around 286 horsepower (varies by market) and was paired with Mitsubishi’s advanced all-wheel drive system. The combination of a responsive turbo, precise handling, and exceptional traction made it a true driver’s car, equally at home on winding roads or the track.
The Evo 9 was also available in multiple trims, including the lightweight RS, the well-equipped GSR, and the high-performance MR, which featured Bilstein shocks, lightweight BBS wheels, and other enhancements. Aerodynamic tweaks, such as a revised front bumper and vortex generator, improved stability at high speeds.
Today, the Lancer Evolution IX holds a special place in automotive culture. It represents the peak of Mitsubishi’s rally-bred engineering before the final Evo X arrived. Collectors and tuners alike admire it for its blend of raw power, tunability, and timeless design—making it one of the most iconic Japanese performance cars of its era.
