Ootoya was founded in 1958 by Eiichi Mitsumori. The first restaurant was called OOTOYA Shokudō and was in the Ikebukuro district of Tokyo.

The name Ootoya comes from the grape vineyard owned by Mitsumori’s father. The Japanese name also conveys a meaning like “big gate,” symbolizing a welcoming entrance for all customers.

The Teppanyaki Showman

In a cozy Japanese restaurant, the lights dim and all eyes turn to the polished iron grill. A chef in a crisp white uniform and tall hat steps forward, knives glinting under the warm glow. With a bow, he greets the guests:

“Welcome to tonight’s Teppanyaki show!”

The grill hisses as he splashes a bit of oil, the aroma filling the air. With a flick of his wrist, the chef tosses a shrimp high, catching it perfectly in his hat. Guests laugh and clap. He spins the spatula like a sword, tapping a rhythm against the grill.

A tower of onions is stacked neatly, then suddenly ignites into a flaming volcano, fire dancing upward. The crowd gasps in delight. The chef smiles knowingly, then carves steak with precision, each slice tender and sizzling. He flips a piece of egg onto a plate with such accuracy that a little boy cheers when it lands perfectly.

Behind the theatrics, the chef’s movements are not just for show—they carry years of discipline, tradition, and love for food. Each motion is a balance of entertainment and respect for ingredients.

By the end of the night, guests leave not only with full stomachs but also with joy in their hearts, having shared laughter, amazement, and the artistry of Teppanyaki.
