Sometimes on checking the shock absorbers their fixations appears damaged; depending on the type of fixation studied and the breakage observed, the causes may vary. Let’s review the most common ones.
1. Breakage of the rubber of the shock absorber bushings.
2. Breakage of the metal loop fixation that surrounds the rubber bushing.
3. Breakage of the shock absorber fixing stem.
4. Fault due to overloaded vehicle.

What may cause a shock absorber to be deformed? It may fall on the floor when being fitted in the car and its surface may hit a solid object that deforms it. The deformation of the body may also be due to impacts with stones or other objects in the road while the vehicle is moving.

Due to lack of tooling, some installers, during the fitting process of the new shocks, fix the piston rod with conventional pliers to avoid its rotation during the tightening process.

This situation produces a pair of characteristic scratches on the chrome surface of the piston rod, that destroy the oil sealing as soon the scratches passes through it.

This situation will completely ruin shock absorber's performance due to the loss of gas (if is pressurised) and the internal oil.

Tighten the top nut of the rod Excessive torque can damage the thread of the fixing nut and split it, causing a serious accident.

Did you know that in vehicles with a circlip, it is common to see that the ring has come out of its position and damaged the rod, often coming out through the upper mounting kits? This fault is only due to erroneous shock absorber fitting.

Did you know that there are some shock absorbers whose design is not symmetrical on either side of the connection to the chassis? In some models the metal bolt of the central part of the bushing stands out a few extra millimeters on one side. This difference is a special design made so that when the shock absorber is working, it does not rub or suffer damage against other parts of the steering or suspension system.

How do we identify shock absorbers damaged by faults due to problems with the wheel alignment? We simply place the stretched shock absorber in front of a white surface & look for any darkening in the color of the chrome in the area close to the oil seal (up to 5-7cm from the seal). If a change of color is seen in this area it indicates increased temperature due to friction between the seal and the rod and this can make the shock absorber useless.

Did you know that when a shock absorber rusts, the chrome covering the rod is damaged? When the rusty rod comes into contact with the shock absorber oil seal in the suspension movement, it breaks it, causing an oil leak which makes the shock absorber useless.
