HOW TO BUY A USED CAR;

Do: Tell the salesman you are interested in something in a particular niche, say a small sedan; then ask him for quotes against several models he might be having, e.g Corolla NZE vs. Lancer Cedia vs. Nissan N16. Or X-Trail vs. iO vs. RAV4. Also ask him (or me) which is best and in what ways.

Don’t: Ask for a specific car e.g. a black Toyota Mark II new shape, KBG or KBH with alloy rims and tinted windows. If he does get you such a car, it will either be knackered, falsely registered or stolen. In case he has just such a vehicle (legally acquired) in stock, he will not lower his price.

As a car owner, you will have an attachment to your car. That being said, you will always want to keep it in the best condition possible. And in the future when it has served you properly and you will want to sell it, you will want to get the best deal in the market. Below is a simple car maintenance checklist;

Read your car owner’s manual, it has all the information on car maintenance as well as safety precautions.

Keep all the fluids (e.g. engine oil, transmission fluid, coolant, etc.) clean and topped up.

Follow your maintenance schedule, there is a number of things that need to be regularly serviced or replaced at certain intervals (e.g. brakes, air filter, timing belt, spark plugs, etc.)

Check tire pressure regularly.

Change you windshield wipers if they don’t clean properly.

Wash and wax your vehicle once in a while to keep the car finish shiny and protected from corrosion.

Deal with any problems as soon as they arise, before they become more serious and require expensive repairs.

Use only original parts.

At least once a year have your car check out in a garage.

Are you planning on selling your car but the car battery is having issues. Knowing the reasons behind it might help you fix it to get a better deal on your car. Below are some of the reasons;

Parasitic Drain: If your ignition is turned off but the electrical devices such as your radio presets, security alarms or clocks continue to run, it can drain your battery.

Old Battery: Batteries that are old or have been drained continuously may not hold a full charge anymore. The rule of thumb for replacing a battery is every four to five years.

Bad Charging System: A faulty charging system will drain the battery while the car is running. When an alternator is not pushing out enough voltage, which should be between 13.5 and 14.5 volts, the battery will drain quickly.

Bad Alternator Diodes: Alternators with bad diodes can cause battery drain. An alternator with a good diode allows current to flow in one direction. A bad diode can leak and allow the current to flow in the opposite direction. When this happens, it may keep the charging circuit on after the vehicle engine is shut off, which will cause the battery to drain.
