Last Friday, the Mining Engineers Society of Kenya’s members and friends gathered for the End-of-Year Dinner 2025, an evening to celebrate our collective milestones, reflect on the state of the industry, and chart a future anchored on professionalism and stronger sector governance.
In his opening address, MESK Chairman Mr Joseph Komu delivered his call to action, highlighting the growth of the Society, the progress in registering professional engineers, and the urgent need to strengthen enforcement of legal provisions that safeguard local participation and technical competence in mining operations. He emphasized the need for qualified mining engineers to play a central role in shaping and implementing decisions across the full value chain.
We were honoured by the insightful remarks of the Institution of Engineers of Kenya (IEK) President, Eng. Shammah Kiteme underscored the power of professional unity and the need for consistent engagement with regulators to protect public safety and build national engineering capacity in the mining industry.
The evening also received distinguished recognition from our Chief Guest, Mr. Thomas Mutwiwa, Secretary for Mining at the State Department for Mining, Ministry of Mining, Blue Economy and Maritime Affairs, whose presence reaffirmed the importance of collaboration between government and industry professionals in driving responsible mineral development.
Special appreciation was extended to Dr. Julia and senior lecturers who attended and continue to mentor and shape the next generation of mining professionals.
Special appreciation to the Kenya Chamber of Mines, who represented private industry stakeholders, the Association for Women in Energy and Extractives (AWEIK), the Artisanal and Small-Scale Miners Association of Kenya (ASMAK), the Geological Society of Kenya (GSK), PRD Rigs Kenya, The Impact Facility, and all our wonderful sponsors who contributed to this success.
A powerful gathering, a united voice, and a clear message: Kenya’s mining future will be built by empowered professionals, strong institutions, and deliberate enforcement of standards.
