Looking for greener pastures, he was invited in Kenya by his elder brother Santokh Singh Gahir in 1941. While in Kenya he worked at Galiry & Robert as a blacksmith and a mechanical engineer for a few years. He later joined his elder brother Santokh Singh Gahir at United Engineering on Athi Street in Nairobi for over 8 years. His ambition to start his own business started in 1964 under the name of
Darshan Singh & Company which was situated on Gorgon Road Nairobi. They were pioneers in manufacturing Block Machines, Saw-Millings and Engineering Services. With his son joining in family business, a manufacturing and engineering company was formed under the name of M/S Gahir Engineering Works Limited in 1978 on Pate Road in Industrial Area, Nairobi. The company has spear-headed into the Engineering business and is renowned name for Manufacturing Construction Machinery and Engineering Services. Third generation business leaders believing in building and promoting local manufactured goods in Kenya.
