Kisumu, close relatives of human beings enjoying cold breez in the afternoon to cool from scorching son.
A clear indication of why we should conserve our environment.

31/12/2020

2020 has never been easy for everyone globally both economically and socially. We have all gone through various challenges for greater part of the year, we have learnt lessons and we have adopted new culture ( no handshake no hugs) and upgraded our hygiene standards(regular handwashing and sanitizing) which is a positive improvement anyway. But in all we thank God for his care and free and noble gift of life to all of us. Its our prayers that 2021 will be a better year for us.
As you list down your 2021 objectives, consider your environmental safety and heath as a priority. Happy new and prosperous 🎉 2021

REASONS WHY PLASTIC BAGS SHOULD BE BANNED.

1. Plastic bags pollute our land and water. Because they are so lightweight, plastic bags can travel long distances by wind and water. They litter our landscapes, get caught in fences and trees, float around in waterways, and can eventually make their way into the world’s oceans.
2. Plastic bags are made from non-renewable resources and contribute to climate change. The majority of plastic bags are made of polypropylene, a material that is made from petroleum and natural gas. Both of these materials are non-renewable fossil fuel-based resources and through their extraction and production, they create greenhouse gases, which contribute to global climate change .
The production of these bags is also very energy intensive. To produce nine plastic bags, it takes the equivalent energy to drive a car one kilometer (more than 0.5 miles).
Using these non-renewable resources to make plastic bags is very short-sighted, considering that the typical useful life of each plastic bag is about 12 minutesÂą .
3. Plastic bags never break down. Petroleum-based plastic bags do not truly degrade. What does occur is that when out in the environment, the plastic breaks up into tiny little pieces that end up in the ocean to be consumed by wildlife. Today, there are an estimated 46,000-1,000,000 plastic fragments floating within every square mile of our world’s oceans² .
4. Plastic bags are harmful to wildlife and marine life. Plastic bags and their associated plastic pieces are often mistaken for food by animals, birds, and marine life like fish and sea turtles. The consumed plastic then congests the digestive tracts of these animals, and can lead to health issues such as infections and even death by suffocation. Animals can also easily become entangled in this plastic² .
5. Plastic bags are harmful to human health. Plastic fragments in the ocean such as those from plastic bags can absorb pollutants like
PCBs (polychlorinated biphenyl) and PAHs (Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons), which are known to be hormone-disrupting chemicals¹ . When marine organisms consume plastics in our oceans, these chemicals can make their way through the ocean’s food web and then into humans who eat fish and other marine organisms.
6. Plastic bags are costly to pay for and to clean up after. While we may not pay for plastic bags directly when we go shopping, they are anything but “free.” Plastic bags cost about 3-5 cents each, and that cost is then incorporated into prices of the items sold at stores. The cost of plastic bag cleanup is about 17 cents per bag, and on average, taxpayers end up paying about $88 per year just on plastic bag waste. So that “free” plastic bag isn’t so free after all.
7. Plastic bags are not easy to recycle.
As plastic bags tend to get caught in recycling machinery, most recycling facilities do not have the capacity to recycle plastic bags and therefore do not accept them. As a result, the actual recycling rate for plastic bags is about 5%.
8. Plastic bags have external costs.
Beyond the costs associated with the production and purchasing of plastic bags by retailers, there are many external costs that are often not considered. These costs include the true environmental costs of resource extraction and depletion, quality of life loss, economic loss from littering, and wildlife loss. Sadly, such costs are typically not included in most economic analyses, but nonetheless, these negative impacts are very real.
9. There are better alternatives available, and jobs to go with them!
Once a person gets into the habit of bringing reusable bags when shopping, it is not much of an inconvenience at all. Reusable shopping bags are very durable and can be reused many times over the course of their useful life. The manufacturing of reusable bags is also another opportunity to create sustainable products and the jobs that go with them.
10. Other governments are banning plastic bags, so yours should too… or at least make people pay for them. To date, more than 40 countries and municipalities around the world have instituted plastic bag bans. The United Nations Environmental Programme Secretariat has recommended a ban on all plastic bags globally

"Changing our planet’s future begins with each of us. Our actions, opinions, voices all influence the way we see the world and those with whom we share it. There’s no more powerful force than when singular voices are formed into a chorus for change."

If a man walks in the woods for love of them half of each day, he is in danger of being regarded as a loafer. But if he spends his days as a speculator, shearing off those woods and making the earth bald before her time, he is deemed an industrious and enterprising citizen.

SEE WHAT IS COUSING 40% (20 MILION DEATHS) OF TOTAL DEATHS EACH YEAR

Majority of Desease we suffer from are the backfire of our ignorance and careless use of our resources on earth. We may think that environment conservation is only about protection of indigenous species of biodiversity and curbing global warming. As much as loss of biodiversity in our ecosystem (which leads to ecosystem imbalance) and rise in global warming (increase in heating of earths surface) could pose danger to our daily living, there is also a greater danger if not a tragedy to our health which is brought about by degradation of the basic natural resources namely air, water and soil. It sounds ironical that we as human beings are the main course of majority of pollution which will in turn affect our wellbeing.

A newly conducted research revealed that more than 20 million deaths around the world each year occurred due to pollution, and majority of them are from under developed countries. Another previous study disclosese that 40% of the total deaths in the world each year are because of one or the other form of pollution. It sounds horrendouse to hear that many deaths are because of environmental degradation but very few of us siriousely think upon it.

It is worth shocking to realise that over fourthy-five types of diseases in which anyone of us have suffered once or many times are coused by pollution.most of them are very common to us but we always seek treatment and we tend to ignore their courses which could easely be prevented. We prefer treatment than prevention. Study the list below and you will find an absolute reason why we should join effort and discourage pollution. Pollution free environment is equal to healthy living as prooved by the list below.

Deseases caused by pollution in the air
1. Asthma attacks because of inhaling various poisonous gases and constant suffocation owing to polluted air
Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease –COPD
2. Weakening of lung function because of constant inhaling of contaminated air
3. Pulmonary cancer – because of inhaling various carcinogenic stuff through polluted air
4. Mesothelioma– another type of lung cancer because of inhaling asbestos particles suspended in the air
5. Pneumonia : an infection of lungs because of breathing inside bacteria flying in wind pressure and moves into the respiratory system of a person who inhales polluted air
6. Bronchitis ; the inflammation and swelling of the air passages between nose to lungs and throat to lungs
7. Emphysema : it’s a state of lungs when tiny air sacs in them
8. Leukemia – exposure to benzene vapors causes this disease which is a type of blood cancer
9. Birth defects and immune system defects; it occurs due to constant breathing in polluted air
10. Cardiovascular problems ; bad air quality and lot of poisonous gases and particulate matter suspended in the air cause heart diseases and stroke
11. Neurobehavioral disorders ; it’s also result of inhaling polluted air that directly affect your neuro system
12. Liver and other types of cancer ; suspended carcinogenic (cancer causing) matter in the air is main cause of all types of cancer related to respiratory system
13. Premature death; the ultimate outcome of constant inhaling of polluted air
14. Autism ; that is tendency to live in isolation

Diseases caused by pollution in water
15. Typhoid; an infectious diseases caused by intake of water with harmful bacteria as a result of mixing of various water pollutants in it
16. Giardiasis ; it’s an intestinal diseases caused by microscopic parasite present in polluted water
17. Amoebiasis; it’s a type of gastro disease and main cause of diarrhoea
18. Ascariasis; it is intestinal infection because of intake of polluted water
19. Hookworm; it’s another form of parasitic infection of intestines
20. Gastroenteritis; it’s an inflammation of gastro intestines
21. Dhiarrhea: that means complete disorder of your digestive system and inflammation in your stomach because of drinking water pollution
22. Encephalitis; acute inflammation of brain because of viral infection
23. Stomach cramps and aches owing to presence of various harmful bacteria in polluted water
24. Vomiting as a result of failure of your digestive system to process the consumed food
25. Hepatitis : an inflammation of liver as a result of viral infection; it’s of A, B and C types
26. Respiratory infections because of flow of polluted water into the respiratory system while bathing and cleaning nose
27. Liver damage and even cancer due to presence of chlorinated solvents in the polluted water
28. Kidney damage because of various harmful chemicals present in the polluted water
29. Neurological problems – including weakening of nervous system owing to presence of DDT and other pesticides in water that mix into it with agriculture run-off
30. Weak sexual power because of presence of various chemicals in drinking water including endocrine disruptors
31. Thyroid system disorders also because of various harmful chemicals in polluted water
32. Malaria; it’s a mosquito-borne infectious disease caused by persistent water pollutants
33. Rashes on skin of sensitive parts of body because of direct contact of various harmful chemicals present in polluted water
34. Ear aches: also the result of direct contact of polluted water in sensitive parts of ear
35. Pink eyes ; as a result of passage of polluted water on eye surface

Diseases caused by pollution in the soil
36. Cancer: as a result of direct exposure of body to polluted soil that has a lot of harmful chemicals including benzene, chromium, pesticide, week killing chemicals etc
37. Brain and Nerve Damage ; as a result of exposure to soil that is lead-contaminated
38. Kidney and Liver Disease : also an outcome of polluted soil that has various infectious chemicals

Health effects of pollution of noise
39. Efficiency decrease of people living in noisy environment is the major effect of noise pollution
40. Lack of concentration ; people affected by noise polluted fail to concentrate
41. Fatigue : persistent noise make them tired sooner than normal beings
42. Abortion ; because of the shocks on pregnant woman owing to noise
43. Blood Pressure ; it is caused because of mental disturbance a person gets because of living in noisy environment for quite a long time
44. Temporary or permanent deafness; it is the most lethal effect of noise pollution and may appear in older age mostly
45. Anxiety; person in constant noise exposure does not have strong nerves and get worried on smaller problems.
(List provided by :National Institute of Environmental Health science, Research square,North Carolina,USA.)

From the study of the list above,it seems that health facilities are there to correct mistakes born from our ignorance of not preventing resource degradation. If each one of us stands out to be counted in pollution prevention and control, advocate for cleaner production and promoting health living we might end up closing down some health facilities.Air,soil and water are the most findermental resources which when we protect them against degradation , then the result will give rise to disease free world for our health living which will in turn raise our life span, improve our economy and consequently our living standards.

Saving our planet, lifting people out of poverty, advancing economic growth... these are one and the same fight. We must connect the dots between climate change, water scarcity, energy shortages, global health, food security and women's empowerment. Solutions to one problem must be solutions for all.
