Bamboo, a grass, is the world's fastest growing plant. Under ideal conditions, some bamboo species can grow more than a meter in a single day. This tremendous growth rate is due to a specialised process known as intercalary growth. Unlike most plants, which grow from the terminals of their stems, bamboo contains nodes along its stems where fast cell division occurs. These nodes, or internodes, elongate at a rapid rate, driving the bamboo plant upward with incredible speed. Bamboo's rapid growth makes it a significant resource for building, paper manufacture, and other applications, while also contributing to its environmental significance as a fast-growing, renewable material.
