A Degerminator a key piece of equipment in maize milling. Its main purpose is to separate the germ (embryo) and bran from the endosperm before the grinding process.
A maize kernel consists of:
I. Endosperm – the starchy part used to make flour.
II. Germ – contains oil and fat.
III. Bran/Husk – the outer fibrous layer.
The degerminator breaks the maize kernel and removes most of the germ and bran while preserving the endosperm.
