The Kenya Meat Commission (KMC) was formed in 1950 through an Act of Parliament.The Government re-opened it for operations on 26 June 2006, after years of closure. This was done in recognition of the fact that with its capacity to slaughter 1,000 head of large stock and 1,500 small stocks per day, it would complement Government efforts in Kenya's economic recovery. KMC is therefore committed to no

Students from the Defence Forces Technical College (DEFTEC) undertook a strategic educational tour of the Kenya Meat Commission (KMC) headquarters in Athi River on 26 May 2026. Major Daniel Ngengi delivered a comprehensive operational brief detailing the complex mechanics of running a National livestock processing plant. The students were taken through an extensive, guided tour of the factory where the engineering students experienced some of the operations. Kenya Meat Commission (KMC), which operates under the Ministry of Defence, there is a massive amount of heavy infrastructure and complex engineering involved in keeping the plant running efficiently and hygienically.

​This exposure directly supports DEFTEC's goal of training technical personnel capable of supporting national security industries and strategic food infrastructure.

On May 25, 2026, a high-level Egyptian delegation led by Mr. Mahdi Abdi Kadir, alongside Kenya's Deputy Director of Veterinary Services Dr. Suleiman Olesarioyo, toured the state-of-the-art Kenya Meat Commission (KMC) facility in Athi River.
