About Japanese HINOKI

Hinoki (Japanese cypress) offers outstanding durability and a refined fragrance, and has long been used in shrines, temples, and many other buildings.

It is ideal for flooring, paneling, and decking.
In particular, Shikoku’s Ehime Prefecture is a key hinoki-growing region.

Please note that clear-grade hinoki is limited in supply, so large-volume shipments are difficult.
We recommend consolidating orders with YAKISUGI (charred cedar) or structural members when possible.
Please note: we generally do not sell logs or unprocessed rough boards (without secondary processing).

Sugi (Japanese cedar) is one of Japan’s signature tree species.

Its lumber features clearly defined growth rings and grain that highlight the wood’s natural beauty.
Light, resilient, and easy to work, sugi is the most commonly used structural and finish wood in Japanese construction.

At KYOEI LUMBER, we manufacture not only YAKISUGI (charred cedar) but also sugi exterior cladding and interior paneling.

About YAKISUGI

Yakisugi (焼杉) is a traditional Japanese exterior cladding made from sugi (Japanese cedar, Cryptomeria japonica). It is produced by charring and carbonizing the surface of the boards.

Kyoei Lumber pioneered the industrial production of Yakisugi in Japan in 1973 by developing its own dedicated production machine and facility. The technology was later adopted mainly in western Japan, where Yakisugi quickly gained popularity as a leading wood siding material.

Overseas, the term “Shou Sugi Ban” is often mistakenly used to refer to Yakisugi, but this is incorrect. In Japanese, yaki (焼) means “burned,” and sugi (杉) means “cedar.” Therefore, the proper term is Yakisugi (焼杉), meaning “burned cedar.”

Kyoei Lumber’s Yakisugi factory is located in a seaside town overlooking the calm waters of the Seto Inland Sea.

It has been nearly 50 years since we began the production of Yakisugi.
Throughout this time, we have continually asked ourselves what defines better Yakisugi, reviewing and refining each step of the process.

Because we produce Yakisugi in our own factory, we are able to respond flexibly to different specifications and applications.

＜President’s Note: “Yakisugi and the Wood Culture of the Seto Inland Sea”＞

In this episode, I write about YAKISUGI, traditional Japanese charred cedar siding.

Rather than simply explaining YAKISUGI as a product, I look back on more than 50 years of our history and experience in producing it, and share some of the lessons and thoughts that have grown from that journey.

I also write about the challenges of the working environment and how mechanization has changed the way YAKISUGI is produced.

I hope this article will be of interest not only to those who want to know more about YAKISUGI, but also to those considering a career with Kyoei Lumber.

We are also pleased to share that our YAKISUGI has recently received “Sugowaza” recognition from Ehime Prefecture.
The “Sugowaza” program showcases manufacturing companies in Ehime that have advanced technical capabilities or outstanding products.

We are grateful that, following previous local recognition of our products and craftsmanship, the steady work of three generations has once again been recognized.

We have launched the Kyoei Lumber President’s Note.

Through this note, I will share the story of Kyoei Lumber—how the company began, how we think about our work, and the values we hold dear—based on my own experiences and what we have learned together as a company.

In particular, I hope to share the meaning and background of the Japanese phrase “Kyonenbika(共年美化)” a concept that is especially important to us, through stories rooted in my own experiences and the journey of Kyoei Lumber.

Especially when working with people overseas from different cultural backgrounds, I believe it is important to share these values and deepen our mutual understanding even before we talk about products.

I hope this note will help us better understand one another, and that someday we may have the opportunity to work together with wood.

We are pleased to announce that our chairman was featured in a news video by NHK WORLD-JAPAN.
The report focuses on recent cultural exchanges between Japan and South Korea, and includes an interview with our chairman during his visit to South Korea.
The video also touches on topics related to wood use and craftsmanship in Japan, as well as Kyoei Lumber’s efforts in overseas exports.

At Kyoei Lumber, we continue to share the value of wood both in Japan and abroad through our work with yakisugi, interior and exterior materials made from Japanese timber, and structural timber products.
We are very honored that one of our project sites was introduced in a NHK WORLD-JAPAN video, which shares stories from Japan with audiences around the world.

We are exhibiting at Architect Expo Thailand.

The exhibition started on April 28, and today was the 4th day of the exhibition.

Thank you very much to everyone who has visited our booth so far.

We are very happy to have this opportunity to introduce Japanese wood products, including Yakisugi and Hinoki structural materials, to architects, designers, and people in the building industry.
