Rothoblaas has been established in the year 1991 in Alto Adige, near Bolzano as distributor for manual woodworking machines to carpenters. Those were times when Italian market wasn’t very keen on wooden structural work because mainly consisting of roof construction, assembled with nails. Together with the growing popularity of timber construction, Rothoblaas decided to improve its competences in t

he sector, introducing the production of screws and fastening systems to its portfolio. The fortunate launch of the HBS screw onto the market in 2004 marked a true revolution in the construction sector: its unique characteristics (mechanical properties, fast initial grip, easy driving) allow the fixing of deep wooden elements effortlessly. A couple of years later, having fortified its operativity in the Austrian and Italian industry, Rothoblaas started broadening its operating range to foreign markets. Moreover its increased awareness of the crucial ascendancy of a well-made construction for a safe and comfortable quality of living put the company in the first line for researching the best solution to this newly discovered requirements. Controlling the water-vapour transfer of walls and roof while ensuring an airtight building cladding, or else refining the acoustic performance also enhancing earthquake and fire resistance are challenges that excellence-aiming carpenters and designers share. Hence the reasons why in 2007 Rothoblaas introduced its first product line of membranes, which today also includes strips and systems to ensure airtightness, to improve durability, to achieve soundproofing and to improve thermal-insulation performance. Rothoblaas also developed screws able to halve thermal bridges and provide structural stability in any conditions and with any type of insulation. Meanwhile a new technology started to become popular in the wood construction world: the cross lam. On the spot, Rothoblaas was the first to develop, produce, certify and offer products especially designed for this type of construction. A couple of years later, once again, Rothoblaas is pioneer of an innovative construction system that aims high: officially presented in August 2014 at the World Conference on Timber Engineering (WCTE) in Quebec City Canada the X-RAD connection system scored another goal. The applied X-Rad technology unlocks and elevates possibilities: no theoretical limit on the number of floors for these buildings as a robust structure supports wood till the top. Furthermore, the level of prefabrication is being optimised while maintaining current construction standards; assembly time is decreased by 30%, the number of structural nodes reduced whilst offering improved plasticity and advanced protection against earthquakes. Following its mission Rothoblaas strongly believes in its dreams and strives to make them a reality. New developments are coming to the world of Timber Frame and Light Timber Frame construction, including for prefabricated systems. The new CLIPTIE40 tensioner allows quick and easy tensioning of the LBB perforated strap, making it ideal for use as bracing for timber frame walls. You simply need to position two straps at an inclination between 30° and 60° and secure them to the top and bottom rail.

By applying CLIPTIE40 to each strap at the Ø6.5 holes (present every metre), the straps can easily be tensioned in a smooth manner, by gradually and evenly applying the tension to both straps.

How much can a connection deform before compromising the stability of a structure?

Rothoblaas evaluated the seismic performance of ALUMEGA connectors through a testing campaign conducted at Oregon State University . Eleven tests — under monotonic and reversed-cyclic loads according to the CUREE protocol — were carried out maintaining a constant gravity load, to simulate real conditions.

The results highlighted the ductile behaviour of the connectors: ALUMEGA retained its vertical load-bearing capacity for inter-storey drifts above 5%.

Quanto si può deformare una connessione prima di
compromettere la stabilità della struttura?
Rothoblaas ha valutato la compatibilità sismica dei
connettori ALUMEGA con una campagna sperimentale alla State
University. Undici prove, tra carichi monotoni e ciclici inversi secondo
protocollo CUREE, sono state eseguite mantenendo un carico gravitazionale
costante per simulare condizioni reali.
I risultati dei test hanno evidenziato il comportamento duttile dei connettori: ALUMEGA ha mantenuto la propria capacità portante a carichi verticali per drift di piano fin oltre il 5%.
