💸 Many look at the installation of a monitoring system as a “safety tax.” A sensor collecting data without a processing strategy is, indeed, a useless expense.

In this edition, we will give you an insight about a complex dynamic testing campaign carried out on the iconic Napoli Afragola high-speed railway station - an architectural landmark designed by Zaha Hadid.

How do you investigate the dynamic behaviour of such a large and complex structure without interrupting its operation?

Through advanced Operational Modal Analysis (OMA) techniques, S2X successfully identified the structure’s modal parameters using only ambient vibrations. From test design to sensor installation and data processing, the campaign highlights how non-invasive approaches can deliver deep insights even in the most challenging scenarios.

Leveraging tools like S2-DDA and S2-OMA, it was possible to manage synchronized data acquisition across a gigantic structure and reconstruct its dynamic response - capturing natural frequencies, damping ratios, and mode shapes with high accuracy.

When we talk about Structural Health Monitoring (SHM), the focus immediately shifts to the hardware: dense webs of sensors, wireless, wired, or hybrid systems that "nerve" bridges, buildings, and other infrastructures.

But be careful not to turn the tool into the goal. Monitoring doesn't just mean "acquiring data"; it means "generating knowledge."

1. Acquisition is Just the Beginning 📊
Installing an accelerometer or a strain gauge is merely the starting point. In this phase, we collect numbers, electrical signals, and frequencies. This is the "breath" of the structure, but without context, it is nothing more than background noise.

2. The Beating Heart: Data Processing 🧠
This is where S2X makes the difference! Raw data must be cleaned, filtered, and interpreted. Our software lets you perform:

◾ Modal Analysis: Automatically extract natural frequencies, damping ratios, and mode shapes under operational conditions to understand how the structure "naturally vibrates"

💬 Are we investing enough in risk prevention and monitoring?

Floods, earthquakes, landslides: recent news headlines remark how our territory is increasingly exposed to risks.
Climate change and extreme events often apply actions to the built environment that exceed the original design loads or were even not considered during the design phase.

The result? Reduced safety margins and increasing risk levels.

In this context, structural monitoring systems become essential tools. They allow to track the infrastructure behaviour over time, helping to maintain adequate safety levels and extend the service life of assets, even in increasingly complex risk scenarios.
