⚙️ In Forced Circulation Evaporators, Velocity Matters More Than You Think!

While heat transfer area determines the capacity of an evaporator, reliable long-term performance is achieved by maintaining the right circulation velocity through the calandria tubes.

Maintaining an optimum tube velocity helps:
✅ Minimize scaling and fouling
✅ Improve heat transfer coefficient (U)
✅ Ensure uniform temperature distribution
✅ Maintain stable evaporation performance
✅ Extend operating cycles between cleanings

However, both extremes can be costly:

🔴 Velocity Too Low
• Increased scaling and fouling
• Reduced heat transfer efficiency
• Lower evaporation capacity
• Frequent cleaning requirements
• Higher steam and power consumption

🔵 Velocity Too High
• Excessive pump power consumption
• Increased operating costs

For most Forced Circulation Evaporators, a tube velocity of 2.0–2.5 m/s provides the ideal balance between heat transfer efficiency and operating economy. In highly scaling applications such as RO reject, sodium sulphate brine, calcium-rich wastewater, and high-TDS effluents, maintaining adequate velocity becomes even more critical.

Many evaporator systems fail to achieve their expected performance because Boiling Point Rise (BPR) is overlooked during the design stage.
As solution concentration increases, the boiling point of the liquid rises. This reduces the effective temperature difference (ΔT), directly impacting heat transfer and evaporation capacity.

⚠️ Ignoring BPR can lead to:
✔️ Lower evaporation rates
✔️ Undersized heat transfer area
✔️ Higher steam and power consumption
✔️ Inability to achieve target concentration
✔️ Frequent operational bottlenecks and downtime
✔️ Increased operating costs
