What is a foot valve and a check valve?

1. What is a Foot Valve?
A foot valve is a one‑way valve that is fixed at the bottom end of a pump’s suction pipe. Its main purpose is to let water enter the pipe when the pump starts and to stop the water from flowing back when the pump stops. Because it is placed at the “foot” of the pipe, it is called a foot valve. This valve helps the pump remain filled with water, which means the pump does not need to be primed again and again.
Foot valves are commonly used in wells, borewells, and irrigation systems. They usually come with a strainer or filter that prevents dirt and debris from entering the pump. By keeping the water from flowing backward, the foot valve protects the pump, saves energy, and ensures smooth operation.

2. What is a Check Valve?
A check valve is also a one‑way valve, but it can be installed anywhere in a pipeline, not just at the bottom. Its job is to allow fluid to move in the correct direction and automatically close if the fluid tries to flow backward. This prevents reverse flow, which can damage pumps, meters, and other equipment.
Check valves are used in water supply lines, industrial systems, oil and gas pipelines, chemical plants, and many other applications. They help maintain pressure, avoid contamination, and protect machinery from sudden pressure changes. A check valve works like a gate that opens only when the flow is moving forward and shuts tightly if the flow tries to reverse.

3. Difference Between Foot Valve and Check Valve
A foot valve is a special type of check valve designed specifically for the suction side of a pump, and it is always installed at the bottom of the suction pipe. It usually includes a strainer to block dirt.
A check valve, on the other hand, can be placed anywhere in the pipeline and does not come with a strainer. While both valves prevent backflow, a foot valve mainly helps keep the pump primed, whereas a check valve is used to protect the entire system from reverse flow. Foot valves must be installed vertically, while check valves can be installed either horizontally or vertically depending on the design.

4. Summary
A foot valve is a one‑way valve used at the bottom of a pump’s suction pipe to stop water from flowing back and to keep the pump ready for the next start. A check valve is a general one‑way valve used anywhere in a pipeline to prevent reverse flow and protect the system. Both valves improve efficiency and safety in fluid systems.

What is the difference between ASME B31.1 and B31.3?

ASME B31.1 – Power Piping
ASME B31.1 is the piping code used for power plants and utility systems. It covers piping that carries steam, water, fuel gas, and other high-energy fluids in environments like thermal power stations, district heating systems, and industrial boilers. This code prioritizes safety and reliability, using conservative design margins to handle high pressure and temperature. It’s commonly applied in electric power generation and heating infrastructure.

ASME B31.3 – Process Piping
ASME B31.3 is the piping code used in chemical, pharmaceutical, food, and oil industries. It governs piping systems that transport fluids used in manufacturing processes — such as chemicals, gases, and cryogenic liquids. This code allows more flexibility in design and materials, adapting to a wide range of fluid types and industrial risks. It’s ideal for refineries, chemical plants, and production facilities where fluid handling is part of the product cycle.

What factors decide heat exchanger sizing?

Key Factors That Decide Heat Exchanger Sizing

1) Heat Duty (Q): Amount of heat to be transferred. Higher duty → bigger exchanger.
2) Fluid Type: Viscosity, thermal conductivity, and fouling tendency affect size.
3) Temperatures: Greater temperature difference → smaller size. Engineers use LMTD.
4) Flow Rates: Higher flow → better heat transfer but may increase pressure drop.
5) Pressure Drop Limits: Low allowable drop → larger exchanger needed.
6) Fouling Factor: More fouling expected → add safety margin to surface area.
7) Heat Transfer Coefficient (U): Lower U → larger area required.
8) Exchanger Type & Material: Shell & tube needs more space than plate type. Material affects thickness and performance.
9) Design Standards (TEMA/API): Safety, corrosion allowance, and mechanical layout influence final size.

Want to master process design, heat exchanger design, or mechanical design of heat exchangers?

At Petromech Institute, we offer in-depth, industry-focused training led by seasoned experts from top global MNCs. How is Pump Capacity Calculated in Process Design?

Pump capacity simply means how much liquid a pump can move in a given time. In process design, engineers calculate pump capacity to make sure the pump can supply the right amount of fluid to the plant equipment.

Two things decide pump capacity:
1- Flow Rate (How much liquid is needed)
Flow rate is the amount of liquid the process requires.
Example: A system may need 20 cubic meters per hour (m³/hr) of water.
This becomes the basic pump capacity.

2- Total Head (How high and how hard the pump must push)
Head means the total resistance the pump must overcome. It includes:
• Height difference between tanks
• Pressure difference
• Friction loss inside pipes
• Losses in valves and fittings
When engineers add all these together, they get Total Dynamic Head (TDH).

Final Pump Capacity = Flow Rate + Head Requirement
If the flow rate is correct but the head is too low, the pump will not deliver the required liquid.
If the head is correct but the flow rate is low, the process will not run properly.
So both must be calculated carefully.

Short Summary
Pump capacity is calculated by finding the flow rate needed by the process and the total head the pump must overcome. Flow rate tells how much liquid is required, and head tells how much pressure or height the pump must handle. Together, they decide the correct pump size for safe and efficient plant operation.
