Can 3D printing restore the function of a damaged beak?
At ARTIS Zoo in Amsterdam, a southern ground hornbill received custom 3D-printed prostheses for both its upper and lower beak. CT scans and fragments of the original beak guided the design, while titanium components helped secure the prostheses.
The result? The hornbill was picking up food the very next morning.
A remarkable application of anatomical reconstruction, digital design and additive manufacturing.
