The resemblance is not a coincidence of photography. It is a coincidence of physics, and it runs deeper than it looks.

The Helix Nebula sits roughly 650 light-years away in the constellation Aquarius. It is what remains after a star similar to our Sun exhausted its hydrogen fuel and shed its outer layers in a series of expanding shells. What you see is ionised gas and dust spreading outward from a white dwarf at the centre, a dying star's last exhale, stretching across approximately 2.5 light-years of space. The entire structure is about 600 times the distance from our Sun to Pluto, lit from within by ultraviolet radiation from the collapsed stellar remnant at its core.

The human eye's iris is a ring of muscle controlling the pupil's diameter in response to light. The radial fibres you see spreading outward from the pupil are called the stroma, a layered tissue unique in pattern to every individual human being. No two irises are identical, not even in the same person's two eyes.

Both structures are circular because both are governed by physics that favours radial symmetry. The nebula expands outward from a central point. The iris contracts inward toward a central opening. Different mechanisms, different scales separated by trillions of kilometres, arriving at visually identical geometry.

The comparison has a name in astronomy. The Helix Nebula is commonly called the Eye of God, a nickname that predates any careful study of what it actually is.

What it actually is, is a star that lived for billions of years, ran out of fuel, and spent its final phase throwing its own layers into space in a pattern that looks exactly like the thing you are using to read these words right now.

The universe did not plan that. It just kept repeating the same physics until someone noticed.
