If you’ve ever seen a surveyor on the side of the road and wondered what they’re looking at, they’re likely using one of these two tools: a Theodolite or a Total Station.
• The Theodolite: The "Old School" master. It measures horizontal and vertical angles with incredible precision. However, you need a separate tape measure or electronic distance meter (EDM) to find out how far away things are.
• The Total Station: The "All-in-One" genius. It’s essentially a digital theodolite integrated with an EDM. It measures angles and distances simultaneously, then uses an onboard microprocessor to calculate coordinates (x, y, z) in seconds.

Theodolites are great for teaching the fundamentals, but Total Stations are the industry standard for speed and accuracy!
