Serration milling cutters: the four things we need before we can cut one.
Most serration enquiries reach us as "same as the last one" plus a photo. That is not enough to produce a profile that will mate or grip properly. Four items settle it:
1. Pitch. Circular pitch in mm, or a tooth count over a measured length.
2. Tooth form and flank angle. Straight sided or involute. If the part mates with something, send the mating component drawing rather than an estimate.
3. Depth and root. Full depth or truncated, sharp root or radiused. The root radius is what keeps the serration from cracking in service.
4. Cutter body. OD, bore, width, keyway, and whether it runs single or as a matched gang.
On stacked sets like the ones in the photo, every row has to hold the same OD and the same pitch, otherwise the outer rows take the load and the rest rub. We grind stacks as a matched set and mark them for sequence.
These are form relieved. They are sharpened on the tooth face only, so the profile you approve on the first cutter is the profile you get on the last regrind.
Materials: HSS M2 for general work, cobalt HSS M35 where heat is the limit, PM-HSS ASP 2030 for long runs and abrasive material. Coating on request.
