The word 'Dhanteras' is derived from 'Dhan,' meaning wealth, and 'Teras,' which refers to the thirteenth day of the Krishna Paksha in the Hindu lunar calendar. It is a day set aside for honouring wealth in all its forms—material, health, and spiritual. According to Hindu mythology, the occasion celebrates the emergence of Lord Dhanvantari from the churning of the ocean (Samudra Manthan), who appeared with a pot of Amrit (elixir of immortality). This symbolises the healing and prosperity that come with good health and riches. People offer prayers to Lord Dhanvantari for well-being and to Goddess Lakshmi for wealth, believing that their blessings bring financial success and health to the family.
