Quantities of raft foundation components are calculated from the approved structural drawings and BBS. RCC concrete is calculated as L × B × T, PCC/blinding as L × B × t, and edge shuttering as 2(L + B) × T. Reinforcement steel should be calculated strictly from the Bar Bending Schedule (BBS). Excavation, waterproofing, binding wire, chairs/supports, and other items should be considered as per project drawings and specifications.

Note: Raft thickness, reinforcement, and other structural details must be based on the structural and geotechnical design, not on thumb rules.

ULTRASONIC PULSE VELOCITY (UPV) & REBOUND HAMMER TEST
Non-Destructive Assessment of Concrete Structures
Assess Concrete Quality Without Damaging Your Structure

The Ultrasonic Pulse Velocity (UPV) Test and Rebound Hammer Test are widely used Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) methods for assessing the quality, uniformity, and general condition of existing concrete structures.

These tests are suitable for buildings, bridges, foundations, columns, beams, slabs, walls, retaining structures, and other reinforced concrete elements.

At Global Testing and Research Laboratory (GTRL), Patna, we provide professional NDT testing services to support engineers, consultants, contractors, developers, government organizations, and infrastructure projects in evaluating existing concrete.

🔹 What is the UPV Test?

Ultrasonic Pulse Velocity (UPV) is a non-destructive test in which an ultrasonic pulse is transmitted through concrete and the time taken for the pulse to travel through the concrete is measured.

Pulse Velocity = Path Length / Transit Time

UPV testing helps assess:

Concrete uniformity and homogeneity
Internal continuity of concrete
Possible cracks, voids and honeycombing
Areas showing variations in concrete quality
Internal discontinuities and defects
Locations requiring further investigation

In simple terms: UPV helps provide an indication of the internal quality and continuity of concrete without cutting or damaging the structure.

🔹 What is the Rebound Hammer Test?

The Rebound Hammer Test (Schmidt Hammer Test) is a non-destructive surface hardness test used to assess the relative uniformity and surface hardness of hardened concrete.

During testing, a controlled impact is applied to the concrete surface and the resulting Rebound Number (Rebound Index) is recorded.

The test helps in:

Assessing surface hardness
Comparing concrete quality at different locations
Identifying areas with comparatively lower rebound values
Evaluating concrete uniformity
Supporting the condition assessment of existing structures

In simple terms: Rebound Hammer testing provides an indication of the surface hardness and relative uniformity of concrete.

🔹 Why Combine UPV & Rebound Hammer Tests?

UPV and Rebound Hammer tests assess different characteristics of concrete. Performing both tests can provide a more comprehensive picture of concrete quality and uniformity.

Test What It Indicates
UPV Test Internal continuity, uniformity & possible discontinuities
Rebound Hammer Test Surface hardness & relative uniformity

The combined assessment can help identify areas that may require further detailed investigation or corrective action.

Where appropriate, the results may also support the estimation of compressive strength through a suitable established correlation, subject to project requirements and applicable standards.

🔹 Where Can These Tests Be Used?

Our NDT services can be useful for:

🏢 Buildings & Structures
🌉 Bridges & Flyovers
🏗️ Columns, Beams & Slabs
🏠 Residential & Commercial Projects
🏭 Industrial Structures
🧱 Foundations & Concrete Elements
🚧 Infrastructure Projects
🔍 Condition Assessment of Existing Structures

🔹 Benefits of NDT Testing

✔ Non-destructive assessment
✔ Minimal disturbance to the structure
✔ Helps identify variations in concrete quality
✔ Suitable for existing structures
✔ Helps select areas for further investigation
✔ Supports engineers and consultants in condition assessment
✔ UPV and Rebound Hammer can be used together for improved assessment

Important Technical Note

UPV and Rebound Hammer tests are indicative non-destructive assessment methods. Results can be influenced by factors such as moisture condition, surface condition, carbonation, aggregate type, age of concrete, temperature, test orientation, and other site conditions.

Therefore, results should be interpreted by a competent technical professional. NDT results should not be considered a direct replacement for destructive compressive-strength testing. Where required, core testing or other appropriate investigations may be recommended.
