Air Castors for Moving Heavy Loads:
Definition – Air castors (or air bearings/air skates) are load-moving devices that use compressed air to create a thin film between the floor and the load, allowing heavy objects to “float” and move with minimal friction.
Working Principle – When compressed air is supplied, the castors lift the load slightly and form an air cushion, reducing contact with the ground. This enables effortless movement of large and heavy items.
Load Capacity – Each air castor can handle several tonnes, and multiple units can be combined to move loads ranging from a few hundred kilograms to hundreds of tonnes.
Low Friction & Effortless Movement – Since the load floats on air, the force required to move it is very small, allowing operators to push or steer with ease.
Omnidirectional Movement – Loads can be moved in any direction smoothly, including sideways and rotational movement, unlike wheeled systems.
Floor Requirement – They need a smooth, non-porous floor (like concrete or epoxy-coated surfaces) for optimal performance.
Safety – Reduced strain on operators, no rolling resistance, and no point loads on the floor make them safe for sensitive environments.
Applications – Widely used in manufacturing plants, aerospace, power generation, shipbuilding, clean rooms, and heavy equipment assembly lines.
Advantages over Wheels/Crane Systems – Easier maneuverability, lower floor wear, ability to move massive loads in tight spaces, and lower operating costs.
Limitations – Require continuous air supply, suitable flooring, and are less effective on uneven, porous, or outdoor surfaces.
