Racing Instinct. - Passing on the “R series” DNA -

- Humachine Technologies & Sensual Racing Form -
The YZF-R1 and YZF-R6 are equipped with under cowls that are based on the image of a diffuser, to give them the best form for aero-management. These are not cowls for simply enclosing the engine, but forms composed of blade surfaces that actively control airflow. This spirit has been directly inherited by the YZF-R15 version 2.0.

“Harmony between rider and machine.” YAMAHA's Human Technology involves studying the form of the motorcycle actually in motion with the rider on it. The R series is the embodiment of 1) a wide frontal space that protects the rider, 2) an easy to ride seating area that gives riders the freedom of movement and allows them to steer effectively, 3) the glamorous tail treatment that takes into account the management of airflow behind the rider, and 4) a sensual racing form that brings all 3 of these elements together in a harmonious package. These characteristics have been splendidly reproduced in the YZF-R15 version 2.0.

The YZF-R15 version 2.0 is a new model that has been developed under the concept of a “Graded Up R15.” While maintaining the proven ease of handling of the existing R15, the R15 version 2.0 boasts of spruced up looks and better performance in circuit riding. The design elements are borrowed from the supersport model YZF-R1 that is adapted from YZR-M1 MotoGP race machine.

The YZF-R15 version 2.0 – is a 150cc liquid-cooled 4-stroke fuel injected bike. The R15 version 2.0 has undergone changes as compared to the present YZF-R15 in the specs of the Engine Control unit (ECU), drivetrain unit, a long aluminum swing arm, wider front and rear tires (radial tire for the rear), split seat, LED taillights and new-design middle cowl & tail cowl.

2014 Indian Auto Expo: Yamaha launches Alpha 113cc scooter

Yamaha India has launched a new unisex scooter called Alpha at a starting price of Rs 49,518 ex-showroom Delhi. The Apha is based on the Ray’s underpinnings and has a bulbous body similar to the Honda Activa, TVS Jupiter and Suzuki Access, its competitors in the segment. The Alpha is only a new design and not an all new scooter as it shares mechanicals with the Ray and Ray Z. Yamaha India plans to sell 2,00,000 units of the Alpha scooter in its first year.

The Alpha is an important addition to the Yamaha range as the two-wheeler manufacturer is increasingly focusing on scooters as it sees greater growth in the segment. At present, Yamaha India has only two scooters in the Ray and Ray Z and over ten motorcycles in its line-up yet by 2015, the Japanese manufacturer expects scooter sales to match motorcycle sales in India. Yamaha Motor India’s VP – Sales and Marketing, Roy Kurian says, “You can expect our growth and our focus more in scooters because it is going to drive volumes.” Yamaha expects total sales of close to 8.5 million units this year and cross the 1 million mark in 2015 including exports.

The Alpha has the same 113cc air-cooled 4-stroke two-valve single cylinder engine powering the Ray scooters. Peak power is 7.1 PS at 7,500rpm and peak torque is 8.1 Nm at 5,000 rpm. It gets telescopic suspension up front and unit swing type in the rear. The 104 kg scooter get 130mm drum brakes for the front and rear with no disc brake option. Yamaha claims a SIAM certified fuel efficiency figure of 62 kmpl for the Alpha.

The Alpha gets top mounted headlights unlike the fairing mounted ones on the Ray and Ray Z, wide body and what looks like a comfortable seat. It measures 1,795mm in length, 675mm in width and 1124mm in height with a wheelbase of 1270mm. It will be available in five colours – Black, Grey, White, Red and Magenta.

Japanese two-wheeler giant Yamaha launched its innovative three-wheeler scooter, Tricity in Thailand

Within a year of showcasing the 125cc Tricity three-wheeler bike, Yamaha has launched the production version of the scooter. What will delight most Yamaha scooter aficionados is the fact that the new Tricity’s design hasn’t been altered much and it looks as snazzy and futuristic as the concept model. According to the Yamaha, the Tricity has been developed to attract the non-riding members. Since it’s a three-wheeler, one doesn’t have to worry about stability and it will be faster and cheaper alternative than cars for urban commuting.

The Tricity features two wheels at front and one at rear and the highlight of the scooter is its Leaning Multi Wheel (LMW) mechanism. This system allows the front wheel to lean and tilt alongwith the chassis while cornering. The Yamaha Tricity is able to do so because of a parallelogram link that enables the rider to lean the scooter like any conventional two-wheeler. Another key component in its handling is the special tandem-type cantilevered telescopic front forks that feature two separate tubes for each wheel. Apart from maintaining the distance between the twin front wheels while cornering it also helps in providing good ridequality over bumps

Powering the Tricity is 125cc, liquid-cooled and fuel-injected mill which is claimed to pump out around 11PS of power. The motor transmits to the rear-wheel via a conventional CVT transmission. Braking is done by 220mm front discs and 230mm rear disc with a Unified Brake System (UBS). The UBS is similar to the Combi Brake System (CBS) found on the Honda Activa applies both the brakes even if just the rear brake is applied. This system is beneficial under emergency braking as the distance of braking is reduced by close to 15 per cent. One of the key criteria’s while developing the Tricity was to keep the weight as less as possible to improve the scooters manoeuvrability. The Tricity tips the scale at 152kg, which is good for its dimensions and employs a lightweight tubular frame alongwith cast alloy wheels. Like any conventional scooter it has under-seat storage for storing a half-face helmet while the instrument cluster is all-digital. The Tricity has been launched in Thailand, where it is manufactured and will debut in the European market in the next few months and will priced at less than €4,000 (Rs 3.2 lakh).
