Why does filtration slow down?

A low filtration rate in a filter press usually indicates process or operating gaps rather than equipment failure. When filtration slows, cycle time increases, output drops, and operating costs rise.

Dry Running in Pumps - A Critical Risk

Running a pump without liquid, even briefly, causes serious damage.

The mechanical seal depends on the pumped liquid to keep its faces cool and lubricated, so under dry running, it fails almost immediately, causing leakage.

The impeller is designed to work with fluid for cooling and lubrication, but when it runs dry, it overheats, wears rapidly, and may crack or melt.

The casing and back plate are also exposed to abnormal heat, which leads to distortion, surface scoring, and potential seizure of the rotating parts.

Impact of Excessive Heat on Impeller and Pump Components

In some cases, the excessive heat also causes the impeller lock nut to loosen. Once this happens, the impeller shifts along the shaft and leads to severe metal-to-metal contact or melting of non-metallic parts and accelerated wear inside the pump casing.

𝗣𝘂𝗺𝗽: 𝗥𝗲𝗴𝘂𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗲, 𝗗𝗼𝗻’𝘁 𝗧𝗵𝗿𝗼𝘁𝘁𝗹𝗲

In pumping systems, efficiency is not achieved by forcing the pump to deliver less — it is achieved by regulating the pump to deliver exactly what the process needs.

Many users still rely on throttling valves to control flow. While simple, throttling is the least efficient method. It increases friction losses, wastes energy, and pushes the pump to operate away from its Best Efficiency Point (BEP). Over time, this leads to higher power consumption, vibration, noise, premature wear, seal failures, and frequent downtime.

A better strategy is regulating the pump, not throttling it.

• Use VFDs to match pump speed with system demand.
• Select a pump size that keeps operation near the BEP.
• Design the system to reduce resistance and manual adjustments.
• Track head–flow needs and regulate based on actual load.

When a pump runs at the right speed and load, it delivers optimum performance with minimum energy, longer life, and higher reliability.
