Robert Bosch: A Visionary Leader

Robert Bosch was a German industrialist, engineer, and inventor who founded Robert Bosch GmbH, one of the world's leading suppliers of automotive technology and consumer goods. He was also a strong advocate for social responsibility.

Bosch was born in Albeck, in the Swabian Highlands near Ulm, Germany, on September 23, 1861. He was the fifth of twelve children born to Servatius Bosch and Maria Margarita Dölle. Servatius ran a large progressive farm that included a brewery.

Bosch attended the 'Realanstalt' in Ulm until 1879, where he completed an apprenticeship as a "precision-instrument maker." After graduating, he worked as a journeyman at C. & E. Fein, a manufacturer of electrical equipment. In 1881, he fulfilled his year of military service in Ulm, followed by employment with Schuckert & Co., a manufacturer of electrical machines.

In 1886, Bosch founded the "Workshop for Precision Mechanics and Electrical Engineering" in Stuttgart. This was the birth of today's globally operating company, Bosch. Right from the start, it was characterized by innovative strength and social commitment.

Robert Bosch's legacy is vast and enduring. Bosch is now one of the world's leading suppliers of automotive technology and consumer goods. The Robert Bosch Stiftung is one of the largest charitable foundations in Germany.
