𝗔𝗽𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗦𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀 – 𝟲 𝗼𝗳 𝟲: 𝗘𝗻𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰𝘀

We close our 6-part application series with the most widely used—and often most critical—category in product development: engineering plastics.

Across industries, the majority of functional components are not exotic—they are enclosures, brackets, ducts, connectors, mounts, and covers that need to work reliably, fit precisely, and be delivered on time. This is where material selection, process discipline, and manufacturing consistency matter more than anything else.

At Stratnel, we support these everyday engineering requirements using a range of high-performance thermoplastics including 𝗔𝗦𝗔, 𝗣𝗼𝗹𝘆𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗯𝗼𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗲, 𝗨𝗹𝘁𝗲𝗺 𝟵𝟬𝟴𝟱, 𝗣𝗘𝗧𝗚, 𝗡𝘆𝗹𝗼𝗻, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗙𝗥 𝗯𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗱𝘀 — delivered through controlled additive manufacturing processes. As well as an excellent range of thermoset resins that mimic specific thermoset polymers, and come with very high finish using SLA and Vacuum Casting.

𝗪𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗲𝘀 𝗮 𝗱𝗶𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲:

• Functional enclosures with precise fits and clean finishes
• Structural brackets and mounts designed for load and durability
• Airflow components and ducts with optimized geometry
• Connectors and housings with integrated features
• Jigs, fixtures, and support parts for production environments

From early prototypes to low-volume production, the focus remains the same—functional parts that perform in real-world conditions.

Over the past 6 posts, we’ve covered applications across Investment Casting, Aerospace, UAVs, Automotive, Robotics, and now Engineering Plastics. The objective is simple:
help you move from design to reliable parts—faster and with confidence.

Application Series 5 of 6: Multi-material Robotics Components

Robotic systems demand more than individual components—they require precise integration of rigid, flexible, and transparent elements within a single functional assembly.
In this fifth post of our application series, we focus on how Stratnel supports robotics development with production-grade, multi-material components.

Vacuum Casting enables this integration by replicating complex geometries with excellent surface finish and material versatility—without the constraints of traditional tooling. From clear enclosures that expose internal electronics, to glass-filled structural parts and elastomeric elements for motion and damping, multiple functional requirements can be addressed within one cohesive design.

Material Capabilities for Robotics:
• Clear Polyurethanes: Transparent housings for sensors, electronics, and inspection-critical applications
• Glass-Filled Systems: Rigid, dimensionally stable parts for structural support and load-bearing elements
• Elastomeric Materials: Flexible components such as bellows, gripper pads, and vibration isolators
• Insert Molding: Integrated metal threads and interfaces for assembly-ready parts
By combining these within a unified manufacturing approach, robotic assemblies can be optimized for performance, durability, and system-level efficiency.

Application Series 4 of 6: High-Performance Automotive Components

In the automotive industry, 3D printing has moved far beyond visual prototypes. Today, it is about functional integration and road-ready durability.

For our fourth installment, we’re looking at how Stratnel utilizes a diverse material palette to solve specific automotive challenges—from the extreme heat of the engine bay to the high-impact requirements of the chassis.

The Material Strategy:
• ULTEM™ (Natural): When under-the-hood temperatures soar, Ultem remains dimensionally stable. It’s our go-to for high-heat housings and chemical-resistant manifolds.
• Polycarbonate (Black): Engineered for strength and impact. We use PC for rugged structural plates, dashboard bases, and components that need to withstand significant mechanical stress.
• SLS PA12 (White): This is where we drive functional integration. Using support-free SLS, we create complex air intake ducts and topology-optimized brackets that consolidate multiple parts into one, reducing both weight and assembly time.
From structural loads to geometric optimization, we ensure every part is Engineered for the Road.

Application Series 3 of 6: High-Performance UAV Components

UAV design is a balancing act between structural rigidity and vibration isolation. In our third installment of the Stratnel series, we’re highlighting how Selective Laser Sintering (SLS) delivers both.

By utilizing a powder-bed process, SLS allows us to print without support structures. This means total design freedom for complex internal lattice structures and consolidated assemblies that are impossible with traditional manufacturing.

The Material Edge:
· SLS PA12 (Hard): High-strength, lightweight nylon for airframes, motor mounts, and electronics housings.
· SLS TPU88A (Soft): Durable, flexible elastomer. Ideal for "soft" engineering applications like gaskets, grommets, bellows, and anti-vibration bushes.
Whether you need a rugged frame or a precision gasket, Stratnel provides flight-ready solutions in a single, streamlined process.
