When Amazon built the original Echo, they designed it in-house and used contract manufacturers to produce it.

To get Alexa into millions of other devices, they took a smarter route: ODMs.

Amazon partnered with ODMs to build pre-tested, "white-box" hardware platforms. Other brands simply bought the ready-made core, wrapped their own styling and logo around it, and shipped.

Amazon expanded their ecosystem without building every device.
