Location
The Shed is located next to St Mary's Parish Church in Kilmuckridge. In 2013/2014 a group of local men began meeting in the workshop of a local carpenter and the Kilmuckridge Men’s Shed was born. In 2015 the group began to look for their own premises and with the support of the Kilmuckridge Community and Family Resource Centre (KCFRC) they looked at various locations in and around the Kilmuckridge area. St Mary’s Church offered the group the use of a near-derelict barn located on a private lane on their land and The Shed began working there to create their new home. The members set up a working committee with a constitution, financial control and officers and joined the Irish Men’s Shed Assocation (IMSA). With seed funding from KCFRC and Wexford County Council (WCC) and the continuing support of St Mary’s Church the shed members worked to clear the building of old furniture and random paraphernalia. With generous grant funding from the IPB, grants from the WCC Community Fund, donations of money and equipment from individuals and local businesses they worked to make the structure safe and the roof watertight. The Shed has always had twin aims, the provision of a safe and welcoming place for men of all ages and backgrounds and to serve the local community by small projects of repair or manufacture in wood or metal. The group expanded their capacity in these regards by the construction of a disabled access toilet to make The Shed available to men who need these facilities. With the continuing support of St Mary’s Church and funding from WCC we have been able to develop a small garden area and we use this alongside our workshop to welcome men from the Enniscorthy Community Workshop to visit and take part in meaningful activity – manufacturing small garden items like planters and bird boxes or working in the gardens. Our developing skills and equipment means that we have been able to repair or manufacture many items in wood for individuals and recently to restore a large “Travellers Dray”. This project was funded by and for Kilmuckridge Tidy Towns – this has been our largest project to date and took many months of work. With funding from the WCC Community Fund we recently constructed a canopy over the front access to The Shed to allow us to work outside, making the shed safer by reducing the dust build up when cutting and sanding wood and reducing fumes when painting. With funds provide by local organisations or directly by the customers The Shed has been able to take on a number of other community projects. Bicycles:
We repaired and refurbished a number of donated bicycles for use by Ukrainian refugees. Local schools:
Building planters and raised beds for St Joseph’s School,
Building and restoring garden furniture for Kilnamanagh National Community School
Building and restoring garden furniture for Oulart Community School. Constructing bird boxes for Blackwater Tidy Towns. We recently benefited from the government grant administered by the IMSA and continue to enjoy the support of St Mary’s Church and WCC. Our aims remain the same;
To make The Shed a safe and welcoming place for men of all ages and backgrounds, we welcome any men regardless of ethnic background or sexual orientation and limited only by the needs for safety (we can only welcome men over the age of 18). To use our skills and facilities to support our local community. To these ends, we have regular meetings to agree our priorities for projects and to develop and improve our working environment.
