Thinking about a home lift? 🏡
If you’re exploring your options, here are answers to some of the questions we’re asked most often.
1️⃣ What types of home lifts are there?
- Hydraulic: Uses a fluid-powered piston.
- Traction: Uses motor-driven ropes and usually a counterweight.
- Screw-driven: Moves along a vertical threaded screw.
- Vacuum: Uses air pressure to move the cabin.
The right choice depends on your space, budget, accessibility needs and preferred design.
2️⃣ Do home lifts require planning permission?
In most cases, planning permission is not required if the lift is being installed inside your property. However, external lifts and listed or protected buildings often do. You should confirm this with your architect or local authority.
3️⃣ Do I need a lift shaft for a home lift?
Not always. Some lifts, such as platform lifts, come with their own supporting structure and can be installed with minimal building work.
4️⃣ How much space is required?
Home lifts are available in a range of sizes, with some models requiring less than 1.5m² of floor space. The total space needed depends on door openings and access requirements.
5️⃣ How much does a home lift cost?
The price depends on the lift type, size, number of floors, finishes and building work. We provide a tailored quotation for your home and requirements.
6️⃣ Can a home lift be installed in an existing house?
Absolutely. Home lifts can be fitted into existing homes as well as new builds.
7️⃣ How long does installation take?
Most standard home lift installations take around three to five days, but this varies depending on the model, number of floors and site conditions.
8️⃣ Is a home lift noisy?
Modern home lifts are designed for quiet operation, especially screw-driven and traction-based systems.
