Dr Keaveney will present "Can Titanium Replace Cobalt Chrome? HIP-Nitriding Breakthrough", sharing new data from our work with Quintus Technologies and Uppsala University on nitrogen-enhanced HIP cycles that produce TiN surface layers on L-PBF Ti6Al4V with roughly double titanium hardness and minimal wear in pin-on-disc testing.

Relevant for any OEM &D, , or team looking at alternatives to cobalt chrome in load-bearing implants.

Titanium nitride, formed inside the HIP cycle. That is the short version of what Dr. Shane Keaveney will present at OMTEC 2026.

The longer version. Croom Medical, Quintus Technologies and Uppsala University tested multiple HIP atmospheres on L-PBF Ti6Al4V. Nitrogen-enhanced cycles produced TiN surface layers with roughly double the hardness of base titanium and minimal measurable wear in pin-on-disc testing. No delamination. No separate coating operation.

The session covers nitrogen concentrations, thermal profiles, post-processing considerations, and what it means for AM titanium in articulating surfaces traditionally dominated by CoCrMo.

From our facility in Ireland we have shipped over 3.5 million knee system components and 70,000+ additively manufactured implants. AM, CNC machining and finishing all validated on one site.

The bigger news is ACOT, our new advanced manufacturing and R&D facility coming online at the end of 2026. Significant added capacity across AM, machining and finishing, with room for OEMs to scale through a single qualified supplier.
