Did you know?

In 1886 Swedish inventor Johan Petter Johansson established a workshop in Enköping. Faced with the impracticality of carrying multiple fixed-size spanners for inconsistent nuts and bolts, he developed a better solution.

By 1892 he had patented the modern adjustable wrench, one fixed jaw, one movable jaw, and a screw adjustment, the design still used worldwide. Business partner Berndt August Hjorth commercialised the invention under what became the Bahco name. More than 100 million have since been produced.

Direct drive compressors are low maintenance, but they are not no maintenance. Here is what to stay on top of.

1. Drain the tank after every session. Water builds up from condensation. Left in, it rusts the tank from the inside out.

2. Clean the air intake filter. A clogged filter makes the pump work harder and run hotter. Blow it out with air or replace it - they are inexpensive.

3. Test the safety valve every few months. Pull the ring and listen for air to release cleanly. If it does not open or does not reseat, replace it.

4. Check all connections. Listen for hissing around fittings, the pressure switch, and the tank drain. Small leaks make the compressor cycle more often than it should.

5. If it is oil-lubricated: check the oil level before each use and change it annually.

These five things cover most of what keeps a direct drive running reliably for years.

If you are distributing compressed air to multiple bays, stations, or drop points, galvanised steel pipe is the old way. Aluminium piping systems are faster to install, do not corrode inside (which means cleaner air downstream), and are fully modular. Add a tee or extend a run without cutting and threading.

If your spray finish is suffering, runs, uneven coat, the gun cutting in and out, the first thing to check is your compressor output, not the gun itself.

Spray guns need a sustained 8-10 CFM at around 30 PSI. Most small direct drive compressors can manage a burst but cannot hold that pressure during a full panel. When the compressor cannot keep up, air pressure drops mid-coat and you get exactly those results.

Quite a common question we get: direct drive or belt drive?

Direct drive compressors are compact, lower maintenance, and cost less up front. The motor connects straight to the pump, nothing to adjust, no belt to replace. Good for intermittent use and workshops where space is tight.

Belt drive runs the pump at lower RPM via a belt and pulley. Cooler running, quieter, and longer pump life under heavy sustained use, which is why body shops and production workshops tend to go that route.
