At Coffey, our Operations & Maintenance team manages critical wastewater infrastructure on behalf of municipal and private clients across Ireland. Our role is simple: to keep assets performing safely, efficiently and compliantly, protecting communities and the environment every day.

We operate and maintain 29 wastewater treatment plants and 19 pumping stations for municipal networks, while also maintaining a further 58 pumping stations for private clients across Ireland.

Each site has its own design, loading and environmental sensitivities. What matters is consistent, compliant performance, every day, in all conditions.

๐„๐ง๐Ÿ๐ข๐ž๐ฅ๐ ๐–๐ฐ๐“๐, ๐‚๐จ. ๐Œ๐ž๐š๐ญ๐ก
Irelandโ€™s largest reedbed wastewater treatment plant recently received the Innovation in Construction award at the ICE Awards 2026.

The site uses 11 sludge drying reed beds, eliminating chemical additives, reducing energy demand by over 48,750 kWh annually and removing approximately 155 HGV movements from Irish roads each year.

These systems are not passive. Performance depends on carefully managed loading cycles, biological activity and longโ€‘term bed conditioning. That dayโ€‘toโ€‘day operational understanding is what keeps the system working as designed.

Across the North West In locations including Tubbercurry, Grange and Strandhill, Coffey operates wastewater infrastructure that varies in age, process design and receiving environment, from inland systems to coastal discharges.

Our teams manage this complexity daily, monitoring performance, responding to change and making realโ€‘time adjustments to maintain compliance and minimise environmental impact.

Because in operations and maintenance, performance isnโ€™t about one site on one day.

Itโ€™s about consistency, across every asset, every day.

Last weekend, James Sutor, Electrical Project Engineer based in our Burntwood office, took on the Lake District Marathon Mighty Hike in support of Macmillan Cancer Support.

James completed the demanding route alongside his girlfriend, and together they raised ยฃ1,350 for the charity - a fantastic collective effort for an important cause.

Macmillan provides vital medical, emotional and practical support to people living with cancer. From diagnosis through treatment and beyond, the charity helps individuals understand their options, access the right support, and cope with the challenges that cancer can bring at every stage of the journey.

Taking on an endurance challenge like the Mighty Hike reflects what Do the Right Thing means at Coffey - stepping up for others, committing to positive action, and supporting causes that make a real difference to individuals and communities.

Well done to James on a significant achievement, and thank you for representing Coffey while supporting such an important cause.

This week, placement students from across our Ireland sites came together at the Radisson Blu Hotel, Athlone for a dedicated Student Team Bonding Day.

The event was designed to help students build relationships beyond their own projects and locations, develop key professional skills, and gain a broader understanding of how Coffey operates as a business.

Through a combination of leadership presentations, team challenges and collaborative activities, students strengthened their communication, problemโ€‘solving and teamwork skills while connecting with colleagues from across the organisation. A digital treasure hunt, hosted by Dynamic Events, added an interactive and energetic element to the day, encouraging collaboration and creative thinking in a fun, engaging way.

Hearing directly from Eric James , Commercial Director, and Clรญonnaidh Kelly, Head of Tendering, also provided valuable insight into the opportunities, challenges and career pathways within the infrastructure sector.

For Coffey, events like this are a meaningful investment in developing future talent. Bringing students together builds stronger networks, encourages knowledge sharing and creates a sense of belonging that supports both personal development and longโ€‘term business success.

The day also brought our values to life:
โœ”๏ธ Do The Right Thing
โœ”๏ธ Do It Better
โœ”๏ธ Do It Together

A big thank you to everyone involved in organising the event and to our placement students for their enthusiasm, participation and fresh perspectives.

The connections built today will help shape the engineers, project managers and leaders of tomorrow.

Students from Chase Terrace Academy in Staffordshire recently visited Shustoke Reservoir and Whitacre Water Treatment Plant to gain first-hand insight into engineering and water infrastructure in action.

The visit is part of a seven-week STEM employer project, with Year 9 female students working alongside Coffey to explore careers in engineering and the water sector. Creating opportunities like this is an important part of developing future talent and helping young people understand the role engineering plays in supporting communities.

The students brought plenty of enthusiasm, curiosity and thoughtful questions throughout the day, making for a highly engaging visit.

A key focus of the programme is encouraging more young women to consider careers in STEM. By providing real-world exposure to engineering projects and career pathways, the initiative aims to broaden awareness of the opportunities available across the industry.

A special thank you to Kate Thompson for the work that has gone into developing and delivering this programme. Initiatives like this can have a lasting impact on the choices young people make about their future.

We look forward to continuing our collaboration with Chase Terrace Academy over the coming weeks and seeing how the students develop their ideas and insights throughout the programme.

Coffey and Uisce ร‰ireann Irish Water have won the Innovation in Construction Award (Company Turnover โ‚ฌ20m-โ‚ฌ200m) at the Irish Construction Excellence Awards for the Enfield Wastewater Treatment Plant project.

The award recognises the successful delivery of Sludge Drying Reed Bed (SDRB) technology, an innovative nature-based solution that replaces energy-intensive mechanical sludge treatment with a process driven by percolation, evapotranspiration and microbial mineralisation.

The benefits are significant:
ยท Up to 98% reduction in sludge volume
ยท Elimination of chemical dosing and mechanical dewatering
ยท Removal of more than 155 HGV movements annually
ยท Reduced operational and environmental impact

A key factor in the project's success was the willingness to challenge conventional approaches. Early feasibility assessment, detailed evaluation of treatment options and strong collaboration between Coffey, Uisce ร‰ireann and our specialist partners helped deliver a solution that is both practical and sustainable.

Congratulations to Project Manager David Rynne and the wider Coffey team who delivered the project from design through to commissioning.

Congratulations also to AM Consulting Engineers on receiving the Engineering Design Excellence Award for the Enfield WWTP Upgrade, recognising the quality of design and technical expertise that underpinned the project.

This award highlights the role that innovative, nature-based solutions can play in delivering more sustainable wastewater infrastructure for the future.

To learn more about the Enfield Wastewater Treatment Plant project and the wider programme of works Coffey is delivering on behalf of Uisce ร‰ireann, get in touch with our team at [email protected]. We'd be happy to discuss how nature-based and innovative treatment solutions can help deliver sustainable infrastructure outcomes.
