The Sacred Turtle of Nusa Penida – The Legend of Kurma, Guardian of the Sea
Long ago, when the world was still young and the oceans were full of mystery, the sea around Nusa Penida was believed to be a sacred place watched over by the gods.
One day, the ocean became restless — great waves rose high, and the corals began to crack.
The gods prayed to Lord Vishnu, the protector of balance and harmony.
Hearing their call, Vishnu took the form of a giant turtle, known among the people of Penida as Sang Kurma, the Sacred Turtle.
With his mighty strength, he calmed the raging sea, held the ocean floor steady, and allowed life to flourish once more.
From that time on, the waters of Nusa Penida have been known as a place where sea turtles come as symbols of balance, peace, and protection.
The island’s elders believe that whenever a turtle appears in the sea, it is a sign that Lord Vishnu still watches over the ocean and all living creatures within it.
So when we snorkel and see a turtle gliding gracefully among colorful corals and fish, it is more than just a beautiful sight —
it is a blessing from Sang Kurma, a reminder to respect and protect the ocean with love and devotion.
