Every port has its own depth limits. That’s why understanding a vessel’s draft is essential before it arrives.

Ship draft is the vertical distance between the keel—the lowest point of the vessel—and the waterline. Simply put, it indicates how deep the vessel sits below the water’s surface.

The heavier the vessel, the deeper it sits in the water.

Draft is more than just a measurement—it is a key consideration in determining whether a vessel can safely navigate a channel, access a specific berth, or operate within a port’s depth limitations.

Case in point, in Batam ports, minimum alongside draft requirements vary by berth:
• Public Wharf: 8.5 MTR LWS draft alongside
• McDermott: 10 MTR LWS / 8.5 m LWS draft alongside
• Bangun Merah / PT Bangun Adya Bahan: 5.5 MTR draft alongside
• Batu Merah / PT Profab: 4.5 MTR draft alongside
