Batam is strengthening its position in regional trade.

In recent months, direct international shipping routes from Batu Ampar Port have increased significantly — up 212% compared to the same period last year, with 106 direct calls recorded as of May 2026 alone.

This growing connectivity is bringing Batam closer to major trade routes across Asia. Batu Ampar Port is now connected to key Asian ports, including Shanghai, Ningbo, Shekou, Nansha, Yangpu, and Qinzhou in China; Haiphong and Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam; Port Klang, Kuantan, Kota Kinabalu, and Kuching in Malaysia; Singapore; Laem Chabang in Thailand; Sihanoukville in Cambodia; and Yangon in Myanmar.

As access improves, so does the impact — shortening delivery times, improving schedule reliability, and increasing logistics efficiency.

The shortest route might look like the best decision, however, distance is not always the greatest determinant in voyage planning.

Although it plays a factor, a vessel’s route is also largely determined by other factors, such as presence of navigational hazards, weather and ocean tides, and even cargo sensitivity, just to name a few.

In short, voyage planning involves many complexities that require careful and precise planning.

Similarly, ShipMate employs the same care and expertise in planning your vessel’s shore-end operations.

The ocean is more than just a route. It connects continents, sustains livelihoods, and shapes our journeys.

As we celebrate World Ocean Day today, we are reminded that beyond everything we build at sea, protecting the ocean is a shared responsibility.

So, let’s give back to the sea by protecting it fully, just as it continues to support our lives.

Because the ocean we sail today is the one we must preserve for tomorrow.

Choosing a ship agent isn’t just about getting the job done, it’s about protecting your operations from unnecessary risks.

One thing worth checking: Does your ship agent hold a SIUPKK license?

Because SIUPKK isn’t just a business permit. It’s proof that a ship agency is legally authorized to operate in Indonesia, giving ship owners greater confidence that their operations are handled by a compliant and accountable partner.

In other words, it’s an added layer of protection for your vessel call.

Looking for a licensed ship agent in Batam? ShipMate is ready to support your vessel operations.

Every waterway comes with different operational conditions — from water depth and route limitations to cargo handling requirements — and these factors influence which vessel types can operate efficiently.

In Indonesian waters, barge sizes are commonly adapted to both the operating environment and cargo demands.

Here are three common barge types sailing through Indonesian waters:
🛳️ Deck Barges: Typically carry around 5,000–10,000 DWT, often used for heavy dry cargo.
⛴️ Hopper Barges: Usually carry around 1,000–6,000 DWT, supporting bulk material transport.
🚢 Tank Barges: Commonly used for liquid cargo distribution, with capacities reaching 2,000–10,000+ tons.

So, which one do you often see at Indonesian ports? Share your experience below!

Ever wondered where large vessels at sea are built?

The answer is: a shipyard.

A shipyard is a facility located near the sea or a tidal river, used for shipbuilding and large-scale maintenance.

As a place to build massive vessels, shipyards are equipped with various facilities:
- Design offices to plan and engineer ship construction
- Workshops to produce components such as pipes, plates, and machinery
- Shipbuilding yards to assemble structures and construct the vessel

And here’s the impressive part — a shipyard requires at least one concrete slipway to build a single ship.

So, can you imagine how large a shipyard really is?

Our ports are more than ready for growing operations.

In Q1 2026 alone, Batam recorded strong growth across multiple sectors:
đźš› +12% growth in container volume (187K TEUs)
🚢 +4% increase in vessel calls (27,000+ calls)
⚖️ +15% growth in total Gross Tonnage (19.6M GT)
🪝 +8% increase in general cargo throughput
🛢️ +21% growth in liquid bulk traffic at Kabil Terminal

These numbers reflect growing confidence in Batam’s ability to handle increasing operational demand.

With continuous improvements in infrastructure and operational capability, Batam keeps strengthening its position as a growing maritime hub.

At ShipMate, we don’t just handle operations — we support them end-to-end, fulfilling your procurement needs and ensuring everything your vessel requires in Batam is ready.

On the vast ocean, there is always the possibility of two power-driven vessels crossing paths and risking collision.

That’s where COLREGS / P2TL Rule 15 — the international regulation designed to prevent collisions at sea — comes into play.

Here are the principles of Rule 15:
âš“ First, identify: if you see another vessel on your starboard (right) side, you are the give-way vessel.
âš“ Then, act: alter your course to starboard and pass behind the other vessel.
âš“ Lastly, communicate: both the give-way and stand-on vessels must maintain communication and vigilance until safely clear.

All maritime operators should apply this regulation consistently to maintain safety at sea.
