China Merchants Foundation presents Grand Dance Poem 𝑨 𝑫𝒂𝒏𝒄𝒆 𝒐𝒇 𝑪𝒆𝒍𝒆𝒔𝒕𝒊𝒂𝒍 𝑹𝒉𝒚𝒕𝒉𝒎𝒔
MPHK Group Limited sat down with guest lighting designer Ryou Backhee of Hong Kong Dance Company (HKDance) for an in depth conversation on the lighting design and international collaboration behind the large‑scale dance poem “A Dance of Celestial Rhythms.” A veteran freelance designer from Korea, Ryou first connected with HKDance in 2018; this marks their third collaboration. She was Project Lead for the PyeongChang 2018 Paralympic Ceremonies and has over 200 productions to her credit.
As a rerun, this edition brings a comprehensive upgrade to the stage imagery and lighting design. Ryou recalls her long relationship with Martin, dating back to extensive use of the MAC 575/2000 and MAC 700. This time, a large scale deployment of the latest Martin generation including Mac Ultra Performance, Mac Viper XIP, Mac Aura XIP and ERA400, paired with structured programming and choreographic blocking injects fresh dynamics and layered depth. With audiences shaped by high quality imagery, expectations for stage visuals are higher; accordingly, the production deploys roughly 90 moving lights and about 60 conventionals (including side light and PAR), leveraging the agility of moving lights in color transitions, positional shifts and textural rendering to trace the seasons while serving both narrative and atmosphere.
Spanning Hong Kong and Korea, the collaboration makes effective use of online meetings and shared video references; upon arrival in Hong Kong, concentrated rehearsals and tech runs enabled fast alignment, following a pace comparable to major productions in Korea: about four days of setup for a 1 hour 20 minute performance. While simulations help, Ryou emphasizes the need for final, on stage adjustments by eye so the light can breathe with the dancers. Several fixture models are also new to her, and she looks forward to exploring their best expression in situ.
“A Dance of Celestial Rhythms” uses light as its brush to portray the dialogue between humans and nature. For collaboration or technical enquiries, please contact MPHK Group Limited.
