📍 The partners of the European SEEDS program visited the facilities of the Democritus University of Thrace in Xanthi!

The visit by the partners of the project - https://project-seeds.eu/ to the Student Residences in Kimmeria, Xanthi, at the DUTH - Δημοκρίτειο Πανεπιστήμιο Θράκης was a complete success.

The visit took place as part of the 8th General Assembly meeting, which was hosted in in Thessaloniki. On this occasion, the partners visited the site to see firsthand the innovative cutting-edge technologies designed and installed by the Mechanical Design Laboratory of the Department of Production Engineering and Management.

💡 Highlights of the visit:
✅ Innovative Photovoltaic System: Utilizes solar radiation reflection technology for maximum electricity generation.
✅ Pioneering Multi-source Heat Pump: It combines air, geothermal, and solar energy, operating with a natural refrigerant for heating and cooling.

At the same time, the partners had the opportunity to tour additional high-tech equipment installed in the through other research projects of the laboratory.

🔧 SEEDS Project Workshop | April 20, 2026

How can engineering directly improve students’ everyday lives? 💡
This was the key question behind our interactive workshop to explore real solutions in real living environments.

On April 20, we had the pleasure of hosting an engaging workshop at the Mechanical Design Laboratory facilities, Department of Production and Management Engineering, DUTH - Δημοκρίτειο Πανεπιστήμιο Θράκης🎓

📍 Focus of the session:
The renovation of Building C1 at the student residences of the Kimmeria campus, within the framework of the European project - https://project-seeds.eu/ .

👥 Who joined?
• Undergraduate students (mainly 3rd & 4th year)
• Members of the University’s Technical Services
• Residents of Building C1

🎤 Key highlights from Professor P. Botsaris:

✅ Practical solutions in real-life conditions

💬 What stood out:
A lively and open discussion, where participants actively exchanged ideas, raised questions, and reflected on how these interventions can enhance comfort, functionality, and quality of life in . The contribution of Building C1 residents added valuable real-world perspective to the conversation.

Transforming Student Living through Cutting-Edge Innovation! 🏠

How does research translate into everyday reality for our students? 🤔💡

At our Lab, within the framework of the European project, we are working hard at the Student Dormitories in Kimmeria, Xanthi to redefine building renovation.
Our mission is clear:

✅ Enhanced Renovation: Increasing the scale and productivity of the renovation process.
✅ Comfort & Satisfaction: Improving the well-being and overall experience for residents and building users.
✅ Green Energy: Boosting the use of integrated solutions for decentralized renewable energy production (PVs & Multi-source Heat Pumps). ☀️🌱

Greek Pilot News
Within the SEEDS project, DUTH acts as pilot site owner and technical provider, with a hands-on role across assessment and implementation. DUTH supported the development of a comprehensive baseline understanding of the pilot building, including analysis of energy consumption patterns, existing infrastructure and services, and the availability of locally sourced materials, in order to identify feasible and context-appropriate improvement pathways.
Building on the baseline assessment, DUTH contributed to the definition of more sustainable and circular solutions, focusing on efficient resource use and reduced environmental impact. Key implementation progress at the pilot site includes the installation and commissioning of bifacial photovoltaic (PV) panels and an electric vehicle (EV) charging point—two critical components for the project’s deployment.
In parallel, DUTH completed the installation of environmental sensors in 20 rooms of Building C1, measuring parameters such as indoor air temperature, relative humidity, and CO₂ concentration. The collected data support continuous monitoring and the subsequent evaluation of overall system performance at the pilot site.
All tasks related to assessment, installation, and commissioning have been completed. The pilot is now transitioning to the monitoring and evaluation phase.

Σήμερα το Εργαστήριο Μηχανολογικού Σχεδιασμού του Τμήματος Μηχανικών Παραγωγής και Διοίκησης του Δημοκρίτειο Πανεπιστήμιο Θράκης είχε τη χαρά να φιλοξενήσει μαθητές και εκπαιδευτικούς του 2ου Γυμνασίου Ξάνθης και να τους παρουσιάσει από κοντά την τεχνολογία της τρισδιάστατης εκτύπωσης (3D printing).

Οι μαθητές γνώρισαν τη διαδικασία της 3D εκτύπωσης, είδαν πως ένα ψηφιακό σχέδιο μετατρέπεται σε πραγματικό αντικείμενο και ενημερώθηκαν για τις εφαρμογές της τεχνολογίας στη μηχανική και τη βιομηχανία.

Η διάδραση με τους μαθητές και το ενδιαφέρον τους για την τεχνολογία και την καινοτομία ήταν ιδιαίτερα ενθαρρυντική. Τέτοιες δράσεις συμβάλλουν στη σύνδεση της εκπαίδευσης με την επιστήμη και την έρευνα.

Με ιδιαίτερη χαρά, το Πολυθεματικό Εκπαιδευτικό Ενεργειακό Πάρκο Ήρων φιλοξένησε μαθητές και εκπαιδευτικούς του 3ου Γενικού Λυκείου Αλεξανδρούπολης στο πλαίσιο εκπαιδευτικής επίσκεψης.
Οι παρευρισκόμενοι είχαν την ευκαιρία να ενημερωθούν για τις σύγχρονες μορφές παραγωγής ενέργειας και τις ανανεώσιμες πηγές, ενώ συμμετείχαν ενεργά σε εκπαιδευτικά πειράματα, που ανέδειξαν στην πράξη τις βασικές αρχές ενέργειας, συμβάλλοντας με αυτόν τον τρόπο στην κατανόηση του ρόλου της στο σύγχρονο περιβάλλον.

7th GA meeting ReHouse project
Με επιτυχία πραγματοποιήθηκε το διήμερο 26-27 Νοεμβρίου 2025 η έβδομη τακτική συνάντηση του ευρωπαϊκού προγράμματος ReHouse στα Κιμμέρια Ξάνθης με οικοδεσπότες το Εργαστήριο Μηχανολογικού Σχεδιασμού του Τμήματος Μηχανικών Παραγωγής και Διοίκησης της Πολυτεχνικής Σχολής του Δημοκρίτειο Πανεπιστήμιο Θράκης. Οι εταίροι του έργου από χώρες όπως Ιταλία, Γερμανία, Ουγγαρία, Ισπανία κ.λπ. είχαν την ευκαιρία να συζητήσουν για την πορεία του έργου (https://rehouse-project.eu) και για την αποτελεσματικότητα των ενεργειακών επεμβάσεων που πραγματοποιούνται στο πλαίσιο του στις φοιτητικές εστίες του ΔΠΘ. Εκτός των άλλων, οι συμμετέχοντες είχαν την ευκαιρία να ξεναγηθούν στις γειτονιές της παλιάς πόλης της Ξάνθης και να γευτούν τοπικά εδέσματα.
