May Challenge - Now Open

Small design changes.

Significant differences in results.

This month's challenge focuses on saddle-supported vessels and how ASME VIII Div.1 and EN 13445 approach the same problem differently.

The challenge:

Using VCLAVIS, evaluate the supporting capability and stress response of a saddle-supported cylindrical shell and compare the results between the two Codes.

What is the minimum modification required for the design to satisfy each Code?

The selected participant will receive a one-month VCLAVIS Professional license and featured recognition on our LinkedIn page.

New to VCLAVIS? You can activate a one-month trial.

Submission deadline: May 25, 2026

Designing horizontal pressure vessels supported on saddles often involves repetitive definition of saddle geometry. In addition, saddle components may be manufactured from different materials, and corrosion allowance may differ for each saddle part.

VCLAVIS addresses these practical design aspects directly, simplifying the setup while maintaining a fully code-based approach.

𝗪𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗩𝗖𝗟𝗔𝗩𝗜𝗦, 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗳𝗹𝗼𝘄 𝗶𝘀 𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗹𝘆 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗺𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗱:

✔️ Built-in saddle dimension sets, based on major licensor practices
✔️ Automatic autofill of standardized saddle geometry data
✔️ Independent corrosion allowance definition for each saddle component
✔️ Use different materials for each saddle part (web, ribs, base plates, bolts)

Instead of manually defining every saddle dimension and attachment detail, engineers can move directly from geometry selection to analysis - saving time while remaining aligned with established design methods.

𝗥𝗶𝗴𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗹𝘆𝘀𝗶𝘀 𝗶𝘀 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗹𝗶𝗳𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗽𝗼𝗶𝗻𝘁𝘀

It’s about modeling real conditions — before the crane is even mobilized.
At VCLAVIS, rigging analysis is built around how vessels are actually lifted, not simplified assumptions.

What sets VCLAVIS apart?
🏗️ Internal pressure during rigging
Users can define internal pressure (e.g. nitrogen filling) directly during the rigging phase, enabling more realistic stress and load evaluation.

🪝Fully customizable dressed condition
The dressed condition can be defined in detail, including insulation, fireproofing, platforms, ladders, and other attachments — exactly as required for the lift, even as percentage of their final weight.

🛠️ Independent control of material condition
Users can set allowable stresses at temperature (!), and evaluate corroded or new weight independently from corroded/new wall thickness.

The result: more accurate rigging loads, better stress assessment, and fewer surprises during lifting operations.

Rigging is a critical phase — VCLAVIS is designed to handle its complexity.

🔧 Bracket-Supported Vertical Vessels - Now Faster in VCLAVIS

Designing vertical pressure vessels supported on brackets often means repetitive geometry definition before you can even start the stability check.

With VCLAVIS, this step is now significantly simplified.

✔️ Built-in bracket dimension libraries (e.g. DIN 28083)
✔️ Quickly select standardized geometries
✔️ Automatic geometry filling and bracket creation
✔️ Faster, more reliable stability analysis for vertical vessels

Instead of manually defining every rib and dimension, engineers can now move directly from library selection to analysis, saving time while staying aligned with code-based practices.
