On 10th December 2025, the Ghana Hydrological Authority (HYDRO) Board and Audit Committee, led by CEO Dr. Sylvester Darko and Board Chairman, undertook a comprehensive inspection of major drainage and coastal protection works across Accra as part of our commitment to reducing urban flooding.
The team visited ongoing GARID drainage construction sites at Achimota–Abofu and Kaneshie–Abossey Okai, where progress, design adjustments, siltation concerns, relocation challenges, and dry-season acceleration plans were discussed with consultants and contractors. At Weija, the delegation inspected the improved SCC/Korkorjor drainage system, where upgraded designs have significantly reduced flooding.
The team also toured the Dansoman Coastal Sea Defence Project, where groyne construction and revetment works continue to protect over 5 km of coastline. Substantial progress has been made under Phase 2, including ongoing preparations for additional groynes and auxiliary community amenities.
HYDRO remains committed to ensuring quality, resilience, and community engagement across all flood-mitigation and coastal protection projects in the Greater Accra Region.

On 31st October 2025, the CEO of the Ghana Hydrological Authority (HYDRO), Dr. Sylvester Darko briefed the Parliamentary Select Committee of Works, Housing and Water Resources on progress made under the Performance-Based Dredging of the Odaw River and its tributaries, a key component of the GARID Project.

Supported by the World Bank through the Ministry of Works, Housing and Water Resources, the project aims to increase the hydraulic capacity of the Odaw River and achieve a one-in-ten-year flood protection level for Accra’s urban core, which houses nearly 60% of the region’s population.
Dr. Darko reported that 4.7 km of the 10.4 km channel, representing 68% of the deferred dredging phase, has been completed, with over 194,000 cubic meters of sediment removed. The Caprice to Circle Bridge section’s completion has already reduced flooding in surrounding areas.

He highlighted challenges such as limited material handling space, equipment breakdowns, and resettlement delays, urging the provision of additional handling sites, improved logistics, enhanced night supervision, and better consultant protection through insurance coverage to ensure timely project completion.

HYDRO reaffirmed its dedication to providing Accra with sustainable flood resilience, highlighting technical efficiency, improved coordination, and community safety under the GARID framework.
