From 13–17 September, engineers and engineering professionals from across Africa will gather in Dar es Salaam to exchange ideas and explore what it will take to build a more inclusive, innovative and sustainable future for the continent.

Good engineering listens.

GhIE has begun discussions with the International Association for Public Participation (IAP2) Representative for West Africa and Savanna Communication Limited on strengthening public participation and stakeholder engagement in engineering practice.

The proposed collaboration will give GhIE members opportunities to access IAP2 training and professional development programmes, helping engineers engage communities more effectively throughout the planning and implementation of projects.

The three institutions have agreed to work towards a Memorandum of Understanding to formalise the partnership.

The goal is straightforward: equip engineers with practical skills to build trust, understand community needs and deliver projects that are both technically sound and socially responsive.

“You cannot be passive. Don’t be passive. Don’t be silent.”

That was the challenge from former GhIE President, Ing Dr Kwame Boakye, to newly inducted engineers at the Institution’s 49th Induction Ceremony.

He urged engineers to see their profession as more than technical work. Ghana and Africa need engineers who understand the communities they serve, help solve societal problems and take part in the decisions that shape development.

He also called for greater participation in leadership and public life, while stressing that technical expertise must be matched by ethics and purpose.

His message extended to GhIE itself: Ghana has no shortage of individual excellence. The task is to turn that excellence into collective competence.

For the new members of the profession, the challenge is to stay engaged, take responsibility and use engineering to create value for society.

What does it take to build a lasting career in engineering?

At the 49th Induction Ceremony of the Ghana Institution of Engineering, ECG Managing Director Ing Kwame Kpekpena urged newly inducted engineers to remain curious, keep learning, uphold integrity and prepare early for leadership.

He encouraged them to understand the principles behind their work, broaden their skills beyond technical expertise and take on challenging assignments that build experience.

His message to the new professionals was simple: *engineering is not only about what you know, but how you apply it and the responsibility you are prepared to take on.*
