It’s also important to make sure everyone knows when and how to use them. Using the wrong type of extinguisher on a fire can actually do more harm than good, so pay attention to the different classes and which fires they can tackle.
The main classes for fire extinguishers are:
A - Solids such as wood, paper, and fabrics
B - Flammable liquids
C - Flammable gases
D - Combustible metals
F - Cooking oil and fats
A new class, L, was recently introduced for fires caused by lithium-ion cells and batteries, under the standard ISO 3841:2026 (this only applies in Europe).
