After the summer break, schools, colleges and universities are preparing to welcome staff and students back.

As doors reopen, it’s worth remember that periods of low or changed water usage can mean:

💧 Outlets become little used
💧 Water remains stagnant for longer
💧 Water temperatures change during warmer weather
💧 Flushing routines may be reduced while regular staff are away

To get prepared for the new term, review your flushing arrangements, check water temperatures and make sure any changes to the building or water system during the summer haven't introduced new risks.

After experiencing a prolonged period of high temperatures this summer it's easy to focus on the weather returning to normal. However, water systems can take time to respond to changing environmental conditions.

During periods of extreme heat, cold water temperatures can rise, particularly where pipework or storage tanks experience heat gain. At the same time, changes in occupancy and water usage can create additional opportunities for stagnation.

As temperatures begin to fall, it's worth asking:

💧 Have cold water temperatures returned to expected levels?
💧 Have any outlets experienced prolonged periods of low use?
💧 Has your flushing regime continued as planned?
💧 Have temperature trends changed noticeably during or after the heatwave?
💧 Are there any recurring issues that need further investigation?

A change in weather doesn’t mean there is an increase of risk, but it’s worth checking your water system has returned to normal operating conditions.

With just three weeks to go, the countdown is on for Jack Wilkes and Kyle Banks as they prepare to take on the National Three Peaks Challenge in support of Alzheimer's Society.

In less than 24 hours, they'll attempt to climb the highest peaks in Scotland, England and Wales, a huge physical and mental challenge that they've been training hard for over the past few months.

Thanks to everyone's generosity so far, Jack and Kyle have now reached 84% of their fundraising target, a fantastic start, but there's still a way to go before challenge day.

We're incredibly proud of everything they're doing and wish them the very best as they enter the final few weeks of training.

Receiving a positive Legionella result can understandably cause concern, but it's important not to jump to conclusions.

A positive sample doesn't automatically indicate an immediate risk, nor does it always mean extensive remedial work is required.

Every response should be proportionate to the level of risk and consider factors such as the type of water system, the affected outlets, the bacterial count and, most importantly, the vulnerability of the people using the building.

A positive result shouldn't be viewed in isolation but as an opportunity to review the effectiveness of your overall water safety management and strengthen your control measures where needed.
