Volcanoes produce mostly infrasound, a low-frequency sound below human hearing, from the movement of gas and magma deep underground, which scientists monitor to forecast eruptions. These sounds, also known as volcanic tremor, come from resonating gas-rich bodies and hydrothermal systems.
The loudest volcanic sound ever recorded was from the 1883 eruption of Krakatoa, which was heard thousands of miles away and circled the globe.
