A lot of what makes a tipper work happens underneath it.

We've already looked at the electrical side of the build. This time, it's the hydraulic pipework.

Before the tipping equipment can be installed, pipework is routed along the chassis and secured in position ready for the next stage of the build.

Once the body is fitted, much of this work disappears from view, but it's all part of how the finished vehicle comes together.

Ever wondered what goes on day-to-day in our workshop? 👇

Different builds at different stages, swipe to see what the team were up to...

1️⃣ Fabricating a Smoothline rear door from scratch.
2️⃣ Routing the wiring that connects body systems, hydraulics and controls.
3️⃣ Preparing the body floor for accurate fit-up and welding.
4️⃣ Preparing rear door hinge sections before fabrication.
5️⃣ Reinforcing the side panel structure during fabrication.

There are two V pans running underneath every PPG rigid tipper body, and they’ve got an important job to do... ⬇️

The rubber blocks fitted on the underside help distribute the load evenly across the chassis rails when the body is down. That means balanced axle loading, reduced stress on the chassis, and improved stability out on the road.

In this video they look upside down because, well… they are.

The body’s being built upside down in the workshop to make fabrication easier.

Like anything that takes repeated impact, the rubber blocks will wear over time, so they’re worth checking as part of your regular inspections.

This image contains 90 years of fabrication experience.

Yes, you read that right — between just two team members.

A lot of our team have spent the majority of their working lives doing exactly this kind of work. It's behind every build that leaves our workshop — and it's what the next generation coming through the workshop learns from every day.

A tipper body that stays reliable in daily operation doesn't happen by accident — it all starts with the prep before the build.

Raw material worked down to the components needed for the build.

Accuracy at this stage determines how well everything fits together further down the line, and the strength of the finished body along with it 🦾

Not all rigid tipper bodies are built the same — and picking the right one matters when it comes to payload, running costs, and keeping materials in the right condition on site.

We've put together a straightforward rundown of the main body types we build and what they're best suited for.

No wiring, no tipping 🤷‍♂️

Our team handles all the wiring needed to make the body and cab work together as a complete vehicle — every connection done in-house, before the body is lifted into place.

✅ Chassis runs — carrying power and signal the length of the vehicle
✅ Front cab connections — linking the body controls to the cab
✅ Interior controls — so the operator can tip from the safety of the cab

It's a skilled job, and getting it right here is what makes the finished vehicle straightforward to operate.

Before the first weld, before the first cut—design is where it starts.

A good rigid body isn't just aluminium and hydraulics. It's engineering tailored to the job: load type, operating conditions, what needs to perform day in, day out.

We design with purpose. Every angle considered, every detail thought through.

That's what makes the real difference when it's out on the road.

One of our rigid tipper bodies out doing what they do best 🚛

These shots come courtesy of J.A Barker Ltd, who supply aggregates, sand, and gravel. It's always good to see our builds out on the road, doing the work they were designed for.

If you've got a PPG body in your fleet and fancy sharing a photo or two, we're always glad to see them!

Built to work harder.

The PPG Smoothline body is built to perform day in, day out. Its robust, insulated construction and integrated safety features are matched with a lightweight 6000-series aluminium design, offering around a 250kg weight saving versus competitor builds and helping improve payload efficiency and long-term returns.
