That’s why we’re diving into it as part of Industry Terms Week.

PNP and NPN refer to the transistor output type used in sensors and other industrial devices. It determines how the device switches and sends signals to your control system:

PNP (Sourcing): The sensor sends positive voltage to the input

NPN (Sinking): The sensor pulls the input down to ground

Choosing the wrong one can result in incorrect wiring, inconsistent behavior—or no signal at all. Knowing the difference is critical to a smooth setup.
