Hinkley Point C has finished tunnelling its fish return system.

EDF (UK) announced on 1 October that the tunnel boring machine Sarah Guppy has completed a 620 metre drive under the Bristol Channel. The tunnel took five months to dig, and the machine was then recovered from the seabed by a floating crane.

It completes more than 8km of marine tunnels on the project. The fish return system is one of three fish protection measures, alongside an acoustic fish deterrent and four low-speed water intakes, which EDF values at around £700 million.

Hinkley Point C is scheduled to start generating power in 2030.
That points to sustained demand across marine and civil engineering, tunnelling, lifting operations, mechanical and electrical installation and commissioning, as the site moves from major civils towards systems completion.

Hinkley Point B has officially entered decommissioning.

On 1 October, ownership of the Somerset station transferred from EDF (UK) to the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority, with Nuclear Restoration Services now managing the site. Around 250 staff have moved across, and an 85-year decommissioning programme begins.

It is the second AGR to transfer, following Hunterston B in April, and more will follow.

That points to sustained demand across health physics, safety case engineering, waste management, project controls and experienced site trades, at the same time as Hinkley Point C next door needs many of the same people.
