A classic Mercedes 250CE (W114) came in with a persistent running and cutting-out issue.

For the early 1970s, this car’s fuelling system was ahead of its time. It runs an early analogue electronic fuel injection setup (Bosch D-Jetronic) triggered by a secondary set of contact points in the lower portion of the ignition distributor. It’s a unique design, which makes replacement parts notoriously hard to find.

After extensive testing, proving and disproving plenty of hypotheses, we finally traced the root cause to a fault in the transistorized ignition system.

Fortunately, a modern digital replacement is now available that neatly houses everything inside the distributor itself, allowing us to bypass the bulky external hardware.

While we always prefer to preserve the original engineering where possible, having reliability sometimes leaves you with little choice!

Series 1 RS Turbo was transported in and dropped off doing strange things.

It could be started, but wouldn't idle and apparently driving it was near impossible. This all occurred after a coolant hose split and was replaced.

Naturally considering moisture damage somewhere to be a factor, particularly in the ignition or an electronic part of the K-Jetronic system, testing eventually disproved that theory.
In the end a purely coincidental mechanical failure within the piston type dump valve (very 90s!) was the issue. Removed and blanked off the engine is back to running sweet again.

A tidy little MG Metro in for a running issue.
Any more throttle than normal driving would have the engine fade and not accelerate properly. This is a common issue I find after a 'stage 1 upgrade'; K&N pancake filter and 3 branch exhaust manifold. Other than that the A+ Series engine was totally stock.

After the carburettor needle was changed for a suitable replacement and a bit of fettling, it picked up another useful 10ish bhp!

A rare Mk5 Cortina XR6 with a 3.1 Ric Wood Motorsport engine, in for a triple Weber conversion and set up.

An interesting version that was never made available to the UK market, only South Africa. Essentially a sport/touring model with a 3.0 Essex and completely different rear axle linkage set up.
Most Cortina rear axles of this era had lower trailing links and an upper 'A' arm to control both axle wind-up and lateral (side to side) movement, anyone remember doing Void Bushes on these?
This is more like a soft 5 link setup with anti tramp bars and a panhard rod.

A nicely restored example, now back with it's owner to enjoy.

AC Cobra kit car (Pilgrim) with the ever popular Rover V8 fitted, running a 4-barrel Edelbrock carburettor.
Turned up in the workshop; underpowered and sounding more like a Subaru flat 4!

Sorted now and running back on all 8 cylinders.

Freshly built Mk1 Mexico with a new fast road spec engine.
In for the initial setting up of the twin Weber DCOEs and programmable 123 Ignition system, so the owner can continue putting some miles on running in the engine.

A little known fact it seems; a newly reconditioned engines fueling requirements change once it has been properly bed in. As carburetors are fixed metering devices, following calibration they can't compensate for this.

Following running in, this one will return to have the carbs recalibrated again.
