This bike is an old Ludwig and was rescued from a second hand shop in Hackney. The frame was stripped of paint and powder coated in British Racing Green. The running gear and brakes are a hybrid collection of Shimano and Campagnolo components. The bottom bracket (BB) consists of 2 x shells, 2 x sets of bearing and an axle. It is unusual in that both shells are 36mm x 24tpi diameter right hand threads (RHT). As opposed to the normal set up of shells being 34.5mm x 24tpi in diameter of 1 x left hand thread for the drive side and one right hand thread for the non-drive side. The problem that I encountered with having 2 x RHT shells is that the drive side, due to the action of the ball bearings tends to unscrew it self, when pedalling, after a 30 mile bike ride a gap of 5mm had developed between the drive side BB face and the BB shell face.. To fix this problem I ensured that all threaded areas are clean of rust without burs so that the shells and locking nut screw in and out with finger pressure. I also faced off the drive side bottom bracket face to give as large a flat surface as possible for the BB shell to tighten against and then I assemble the drive with thread locking compound and left it for 48 hours for the compound to set. I will test on another cycle ride this week and report back.
