Spring contracts are starting to move across manufacturing and FMCG sites.

As Q1 projects wrap up, many businesses are locking in resource for summer shutdowns, line installations, commissioning work, and wider project delivery.

Consequently, this is creating demand for contractors who can start in May and June.

At the moment, we’re seeing opportunities across maintenance, automation and controls, and project engineering.

Maintenance roles are typically landing in the three to six month range, while automation and controls briefs are tied to project delivery, especially where PLC programming, robotics integration, or SCADA capability is needed.

Project engineering demand is also active around capital projects, commissioning, and line installs.

Rates are varying by role and level of specialist experience, but current activity is sitting broadly within the ranges above.

For contractors whose current assignment is due to finish in April or early May, this tends to be a good point to start exploring the next move.

Sites are planning ahead, and earlier conversations often mean more choice around scope, timing, and rate.

If your current contract finishes in April or early May, we’re happy to talk through what’s available.

If you're a contractor planning to work through summer, the next few weeks are a good time to explore options.

Manufacturing activity remains steady through Easter and into the summer months.

Sites are preparing for planned shutdowns, line upgrades, automation installations, and holiday cover, all of which create demand for short-term engineering support.

Contractors who start conversations around this point in the year tend to have more flexibility.

It’s often easier to secure roles with a defined scope, agreed timelines, and rates in place ahead of June and July start dates.

At the moment, we’re seeing consistent demand for automation engineers, controls specialists, multi-skilled maintenance engineers, and project engineers.

Most contracts are running between two and six months, with day rates generally ranging from £300 to £700 depending on role and level of specialism.

If you’d prefer to have visibility on what’s available for summer rather than waiting until May, we’re happy to talk through current opportunities and timelines.

Spring's a good time to reassess what works for you.

If you've been contracting and you're ready for more stability, permanent roles offer benefits, progression, and a team you're part of long-term.

Roles will include pension, sick pay, holiday cover, and more time building something that lasts.

If you've been permanent and you're looking for more variety, contractor rates are typically 20-30% higher for in-demand skills.

You get more control over your schedule and the chance to develop skills across different sites and environments.

Neither route is better, it just depends on what fits where you are now and what you're looking for next.

We place both contractors and permanent engineers.

If you'd like an honest conversation about what works for you and what's realistically available, talk to the Synergi team.

Are your Q2 projects fully resourced or are you still building the team to deliver them?

For businesses that secured engineering resource earlier in the year, this period is about onboarding and getting people up to speed. For those still hiring, timelines can tighten quickly.

Typical processes are still running at a steady pace, and notice periods of four to six weeks remain common, with interview and offer stages taking a couple of weeks alongside that.

When you map that against June project deadlines, it leaves a relatively small window to secure the right people.

We’re also seeing consistent demand for automation engineers, controls specialists, and multi-skilled maintenance engineers with strong fault-finding capability. In some cases, that’s adding further pressure to already competitive hiring processes.

If you’re hiring for Q2 projects and want a clear view of timelines and availability, we’re happy to talk it through.

Is your engineering team ready for the April activity spike?

For many engineering teams, it marks the shift from planning to delivery.

Projects that were approved earlier in the year begin to take shape, whether that’s equipment arriving on site, installation dates being confirmed, or shutdowns approaching.

At the same time, candidate behaviour changes.

Conversations that started in January and February often turn into active interview processes, and those who handed in their notice in March typically become available from May onwards.

There’s also a noticeable movement on the contractor side. Short-term contracts coming out of Q4 and early Q1 begin to wrap up, which creates a window of availability.

Once those contractors secure their next role, they are usually committed for several months.

When you layer in standard hiring timelines, the window becomes clearer. Interview processes and offers can take a couple of weeks, followed by notice periods that often run between four and six weeks.

For teams hiring against Q2 project deadlines, that timing can move quickly. Taking stock of requirements early in April tends to give more flexibility and a better chance of securing the right fit.

If you’re building out your engineering team for the months ahead, we’re happy to talk through timelines and current availability.

Maintenance engineering roles are still demanding a strong mix of technical skill, problem-solving, and adaptability.

For engineers looking at their next move, it’s clear that employers are placing real value on practical fault-finding ability, reliability-focused maintenance experience, and the confidence to work across both electrical and mechanical tasks.

Just 16.5%.

That’s the proportion of women in the UK engineering workforce.

As we mark International Women’s Day, it’s a reminder that while progress has been made, representation across manufacturing and engineering still has room to grow.

Diverse teams drive better problem-solving, stronger innovation, and more resilient businesses. Inclusive hiring isn’t just a social initiative, it’s a commercial advantage.

At Synergi, we’re proud to support clients and candidates across the engineering sector and to champion greater representation within the industry.
