A code on a car component or a circuit board might still need to be readable in fifteen years, after heat, oil, vibration and a few rounds of cleaning have had a go at it.

That is the hard part of automotive and electronics traceability. The code has to last the life of the part, stay scannable for warranty and recall, and it usually has to sit somewhere tight, on a surface that was never meant to carry a code.

A drum of industrial chemical can spend months outdoors, get hosed down, knocked about and stacked, and the label still has to be legible and the GHS pictograms still have to be right at the end of it.

That is a demanding brief for a label, and it starts with the material rather than the print.

▪ Solvents, oils and cleaning agents that attack a standard facestock
▪ Wet and greasy surfaces the adhesive has to grip
▪ Outdoor storage, UV and temperature swings
▪ GHS pictograms and hazard text that must stay compliant and legible

Get the facestock, adhesive and print method right for the substance and the storage, and the label holds for the life of the drum. Get it wrong and you have a compliance problem sitting in the yard.

Most labelling and coding problems do not show up on the day you buy the equipment. They show up two years later, when a material stops performing, a line speeds up, or a code starts failing at goods-in and nobody is quite sure why.
